Needs for next draft

Oh, I was responding to the "Does not think sometimes" part of it. It sounded like you were talking about his stupid penalties.

As for a young DT, I'd still say no. If you have a guy like Suh, and he's become a leader, you pay the man what he's worth. He is not worth QB money, but a young rookie is not likely to replace him.

I'd much rather have the current Suh than the next Sheriff Floyd.

Can't we have this discussion at the end of October like we do every year?

True but maybe we use the extra cash to help the secondary and or LB core. Nonetheless, it was just a thought.

If we can get him back at a semi-reasonable price, we definitely should do it. I think the point being made was that we can't afford to pay him $21 million for one season.

The kicker is that if he voids year 2015 and decides to walk we are still on the hook for 9.7 mil.

if he wants to be here its a non issue but if he wants to bolt he can fuck us pretty good.

Why would he want to be anywhere else? Any coach other than Schwartz wouldn't tolerate his bullshit. Here, he gets a pass.

He's got to be happy.

this is why he has the Lions by the balls. His agent will get a deal that tops any other DT. It will be cap friendly early but will probably fuck the Lions in the long run.

He's one of if not the best DT in the league so why shouldn't he get the most money

Absolutely agreed. Last time I checked, no one managed to win a SuperBowl for safe driving.

What he does on the field is dominate. What he does off the field is minor stupid shit.

He's worth every penny

He's not worth $21 million a season (what he's scheduled to get next year if we don't restructure him). http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/83150/geno-atkins-deal-still-short-of-suhs

When he's on the field, not committing dumb penalties, I think he's the best DT in football. Unfortunately, he's consistently committed dumb penalties, which hurt the team. I'd love it if we gave him 12-13 million a year. That would make him the highest paid DT in football and wouldn't completely hamstring us in terms of salary cap.

I'm not sure he is the best but he is right up there with Atkins, Ngata, Justin Smith & Wilfork.

He's not getting 21 mil that is just his cap hit.

From MLIVE

Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley have the potential to be the most dominant defensive tackle pairing in the NFL, but when it comes to individual production, Cincinnati's Geno Atkins is the best in the business.

Atkins, entering his fourth year out of the University of Georgia, has been dominant the past two seasons, tallying 100 tackles, 20 sacks and six forced fumbles. He was a consensus first-team All-Pro in 2012.

According to football analytics website Pro Football Focus, Atkins put pressure on opposing quarterbacks 78 times last season. Suh ranked second with 58 pressures.

Beyond being an elite interior pass-rusher, Aktins is also outstanding run defender.

That's why the Bengals made sure to lock him up long-term. After extensive negotiations throughout the offseason, the sides agreed to a 5-year, $55 million extension.

Other than the fact that Atkins and the Bengals travel to Ford Field later this season, why should you care?

Because Suh and Fairley are scheduled to hit free agency in next few years and Atkins' deal will be the barometer for those negotiations.

Suh is slightly more pressing. Due to multiple contract restructurings, his cap number is scheduled to be $21.4 million in 2014. In 2015, a voidable year in his deal, Suh has $9.7 million in dead money.

That means even if he walks away in free agency, Suh would count $9.7 million against the Detroit's cap.

The franchise tag won't be an option. The one-year deal would cost Detroit 120 percent of Suh's 2014 cap figure, or $25.7 million.

With the amount of leverage Suh will have in the upcoming contract negotiations, he'll be able to ask for a bigger deal than Atkins. If the Lions want to retain Suh, he is likely to remain the NFL's highest paid defensive tackle.

Fairley's contract is far more manageable. He was drafted after a rookie cap was put in place. His cap numbers are approximately $2.7 million and $3.1 million the next two seasons. The Lions have a team option for 2015, that would pay him equivalent to the average salary of the 3rd through 25th highest paid at his position.

But if Fairley can stay healthy and deliver on his immense potential, the Lions will have a difficult decision to make. With quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson already locked up long-term, there's no way the franchise can afford to pay top dollar for both defensive tackles.

Ultimately, the Lions have a couple seasons to let the situation play out, but fans should not expect Suh and Fairley to be wreaking havoc side by side for too long.

based on the above article the best thing for the Lions would be to trade one of them but trading in the NFL doesn't seem to happen like it does in other sports.

The best for the lions is if we can keep them both. If we can't then its Fairley that's gone. With the way Suh's contract is right now and showing that he can stay healthy that is where I would put my money if I had to pick.

having two great DT would be a luxury that the Lions won't be able to afford (when Fairly gets his next contract)
