OFFICIAL: Draft Day (Day One-Three)

I don't follow college football so I'll just wait and see.

Its just nice to get someone new on the OL. Finally. Hopefully Mayhew picked well..

Well I am thoroughly disappointed with the pick. I just don't see why you pass on a player like DeCastro for a 2d tier talent, IMO. I don't think Reiff will bust, but hes not gonna be great either. Honestly hes Jeff Backus 2.0 and would be much better suited if he stayed at RT.

Per Tim Twentyman on twitter Lions view Reiff as LT

"He's one of the two guys we felt really comfortable with at left tackle," said Lions general manager Martin Mayhew.

Schwartz always says he views him as a LT, but he's versatile.

I personally just don't see it. Average LT, above average RT, not worth a first rounder.

I hope like hell he proves me wrong though, just wanted DeCastro so damn bad.

Man, you're ignorant. A Top 15 Tackle falls to you and you want a guard? There's a much greater need at tackle whether it's left or right. Not to mention how difficult it is to find a legit offensive tackle today. Guards are a dime a dozen.

damn dude. And DeCastro is a guard only. The lions see Reiff as a tackle and it seems like peterman is still their guy. SO why take decastro?

Peterman blows. DeCastro has future all pro written all over him. He also gives us a much better push inside on those 3rd and 4th and shorts and immediately upgrades an anemic run game.

Reiff on the other hand is at best a pro bowl RT, IMO. I just don't think he has the skillset to play LT at a high level. Pretty much to put it in NFL terms I would rate DeCastro as a blue chipper and Reiff as a red chipper.

Obviously Lions are either very concerned about Backus health or just thought a lot of Reiff.

I just don't like the pick, but I trust Mayhew and I will let this play out before I bash it.

For me though there were three players I was hoping the Lions would get either at #23 or by trading up and that was Barron, Gilmore, and DeCastro. All three will be All-Pro type players, IMO.

As much as we pass the ball (and the DEs in the North), you'd rather have a pro bowl guard over a pro bowl RT? Really?

RT is not a hard position to fill. LT on the other and is and if I felt he was a LT then I would be happy. If you had a choice between Steve Hutchinson or Jeff Backus is their primes who do you take? That is the comparison I would use between the two. Like I said above just my personal opinion and I give Mayhew the benefit of the doubt, at first glance I don't like the pick, especially with who was on the board.

why do you not watch college football, mitch?

I used to about 7-8 years ago, as much as I could get. I guess because of the BCS and how they stretch the title game out to the week following New Years. I watch a few UM games and an occasional late night when I'm board, just kind of pisses me off I guess ;-)

I don't think Reiff is gonna be that good at RT though. Obviously all things being equal you take the tackle in that situation.

You can't compare those two, a HOF vs a bum..:lmao:

Not necessarily disagreeing with you Monster, but the Saints made it work with 2 Pro Bowl guards and mediocre tackles...

I initially was irked by the Reiff picked but only because I never though he would be there and was convinced he wasnt worth a pick at 10. However at 23 he was the best player available followed very closely by decastro. He will make this line much better since the weakness for ever has been at RT. Peterman is serviceable at RG and the left side of the line is decent. Reiff makes the line much better and will really improve an already potent offense.

Would you rather trade up into the top 10 and give up your 2nd or have a top 10- 15 OT ( major position of need ) fall to us while giving up nada.. Hmmm. Let me think on that.

The coaches have a hard on for Peterman and he's locked up for the time being. He's not the weakest part of our offensive line. Look what we got Rob Sims for.. Practically nothing and he's one of the better guards in the nfc. Try getting a legit offensive tackle for that.

Tend to agree. RT was bad, and has been bad.

do we have two mediocre tackles? No. We have a mediocre LT with a terrible RT and a terrible C.

If we had two jeff backus's, then i might agree with you.

Reiff will be fine and there was no other player worth taking that was better. You dont take a lower graded guard when the number 2 tackle was available and your tackles are not very good. He was critiqued for having short arms....seriously thats it. He is strong and can move guys in a power run scheme. He also absorbs and moves pass rushers. He has good fundamentals and good ability to play day 1. This is a good pick.

exactly my thinking as well. wasn't too happy, i'd still rather have glenn though. i keep hearing analysts say he'll play RT and move over to LT when backus goes.

And that's why I'm tending to think Mayhew made the right decision. Upgrade RT because it's a bigger need than RG. So I sort of agree with you

you said he was at best a pro bowl RT....

and if finding a RT is so easy, why haven't we had a good one in......however many years? it's been so long, i can't remember the last good one. LT is obviously harder to find though. Guards are a dime a dozen. You can get guards in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounds.
