If we wound up with those three, I'd be a happy camper.

So I guy screws up, I insist his eyes have gone bad, and he gets a promotion? Bench coach much better than 3B coach, now he just gets to sit on his ass.

Sanchez really gives us a lot fo options. It allows us to package Porcello for a corner outfielder. Smyly would get the 5th starter spot.

What will it take to get Sanchez back? 4 years $52Million minimum IMO.

I think Sanchez signs for something like 5/70.

Delmon and Valverde made 14 million together. If we could afford to pay both of them to suck most of the year, why not try to sign Sanchez for around that much (hopefully less) to actually be a productive player?

Lamont is already also the unofficial bench coach, he just also coaches 3rd. i think lloyd also shares the position with him, which is why we dont have a bench coach by title.

Nonetheless, "No more standing at 3rd Gene" is a promotion. I mean, who wants to be a 3B coach? Outside of the ones who think its a start of a ML career in coaching.

It's not a promotion, it would be a demotion. Basically they would be taking a responsibility away from him, that's never a promotion.

They would basically be asking him to sit his fat ass on the bench for when Leyland got tossed, work the BP phone, and help relay signs.

"Sir, you're still VP but taking out the trash is no longer a responsibility of yours".

Stupid analogy, but then I'm guessing stupid was what you were shooting for.

Pretty much. Call it what you want but who likes to stand at 3B all game and wave your arm like a helicopter.

If that was all there was to coaching third, they could appoint the person in the seats who left his headlights on in the parking lot.

What else does he do, tell the base runner the arm of the C, or the speed the P is throwing at? Give signs? Regardless, it all comes from Leyland.

A good 3b coach:

Anticipates any and all play(s) before they occur; rehearses contingencies and scenarios with the players before games and ABs and on the bench, even with potential pinch runners
Sees everything and one thing at the same time
Watches how the fielders are positioned, how they move, where they lean, if they are even engaged at all
Watches for the signs that the infielders are giving to each other and reacts accordingly
Can be integral in getting a runner on second the best lead and jump on a ball in play or to disrupt the concentration of the pitcher
Is the eyes of the runner and can gauge whether or not a ball will fall or be caught before it happens
Knows the tendencies of all players in the field and the of the pitchers in the way they tell their pitches or their moves
Knows the visiting parks, the consistency of the field and grass

At least this what I covered with my U14 travel team in 2003...and a lot more.

And our 3B sucks at a bunch of that stuff. And I would bet that Leyland has the info on where the IF are, how they're engaged etc. Either that or the players themselves.

And U14 travel team is so much more different than MLB. Leyland tells where his fielders should play, calls the pitches and gives the signs and I bet he gives the 3B or base-runner all info..

A lot of that stuff a 3b coach needs to figure out for himself. The manager cannot connect with the runner on second, among other things. Either way, it's more than windmilling and ass-slapping.
