Offseason Needs / 2013

I just read that Andre Ethier is potentially on the trading block. He just signed a 5yr/$85mil deal and is 30yrs old. I don't love him as a player, but he could be an interesting option for RF if we wanted to trade Porcello. He's a lefty and a .290 career hitter who averages 21HR and 86RBI a season. I'd be up for exploring a deal there. What do you guys think?

I think we don't need another long-term contract, that the price is too high and that the Dodgers are dangling him to see what they could get. And Porcello would be the tail of any deal that involved Ethier.

We're going to have to pay Porcello soon. He's presently a #5 in our rotation or out of it depending on what happens with Sanchez, but he's still young and would have lots of trade value. We could use a good corner outfielder, and I don't worry about Ilitch's ability or willingness to spend money to make the team better.

I really think if we could swing a deal for Ethier, lock up Sanchez, and find a new closer, we could be all set for 2013. This team would look a hell of a lot better with a full season of Sanchez/Ethier/VMart in the rotation/lineup than Porcello/Dirks/Young.

I like your proactivity and consistent scenarios; makes for good conversation. I'm not concerned about paying Porcello; 2013 is an arbitration year. Maybe that will "incentivize" him to pitch better.

He's still a groundball pitcher on a bad defensive team, and has no real out pitch. He'd be great on a different team, but doesn't really fit what we've got built here presently. I think the playoffs were a clear indication that he's not really part of the future plans of the Tigers.

Weelllll ... when you are #5 in a four-pitcher post-season rotation, you are going to get edged to the corner of the dugout. Maybe there's a place for him in the 'pen in a situational sense.

Don't kid yourself, he was #6. He was clearly behind Smyly too.

I agree on a potential long relief role, but I think we'd be better off trading him as a starter and using the value he's got right now.

I don't know; I just want to pull for the guy. I like him and I want him to succeed here and not somewhere else. Or come back to haunt us like Jeff Weaver did.

I have no real vested interest other than seeing the team improve. Hell, if Charlie Manson can come here and give us 17 wins a season, I'm probably gonna be okay with it.

Leo Durocher had the same opinion about players. He'd bat a convicted murderer leadoff if he hit .330/.450/.800

Or even Herman Munster.

news so far today:

- 'elmn and rotten potato are confirmed GONE (DD said we are not pursuing them).
- Laird may or may not be back (DD told him to test the market. dunno why we wouldnt want him back as a backup, but whatever).
- Don Kelly was non-tendered and is off the 40-man.
- for some unknown reason, Boesch was tendered a contract so he can continue to waste a spot in our system.
- we picked up Peralta's option, but i would definitely look for us to be shopping for a new SS through trade (not that he said that, but i would think its what he'll do)
- Tigers will pursue Anibal Sanchez
- picked up the option on Dotel
- Berry will have to compete for a roster spot
- DD was non commital on mini miggy and dirks, saying hes not sure theyre everyday players but not sure theyre not either
- DD is talking up Bruce Rondon a lot, look for him to be competing for the open closer spot in spring training
- VMart will be ready by spring training
- if Sanchez signs elsewhere, 5th spot would be smyly's to lose. what will happen with suck-ass porcello?
- not ready to address raburn situation because DD hasnt talked to him yet (my guess? non-tendered).
- DD confirmed that upgrading corner OF spots will be a main goal this offseason.
- didnt rule out signing a closer later in the offseason, but "its not a priority and would have to be the right fit". my guess is that rondon is our closer next year. the kid looks good.
- DD on Castellanos: "Could he go back to 3B? I guess he could. When you look at our immediate needs, it's outfield." "We think his bat will play up here pretty quickly." will he be on the team next year? DUN DUN DUN

this is all just stuff i picked up on my twitter feed this morning. ill keep updating as they do. actually, im gonna make a new thread.

Spockmaster: Who are you following to get this info? Thanks.

Leyland confirms they'll have one change of roles on Tigers coaching staff. Not ready to announce yet.

We need a COF, closer, 2B, SS and we have no money to do it. Get er done DD. Delmon and Valverde peace out. Need an upgrade to Peralta. Think we need to resign Anibal so you may need to add a SP to that list. Trade Porcello for something...use Smyly as your 5th starter during the season.

Infante is fine at 2B, and we're gonna have Peralta for one more year, hopefully he has one of his good years.

Don't need a closer either, have plenty of pitchers capable of closing games.

We have no money? How do you know.
