Devin Gardner recently tweeted....

I have a lot, lot, lot of thinking to do!!!

Especially if he doesn't get his medical redshirt I wouldn't blame him at all if he wanted to transfer. But it would suuuuck.

I saw that but I think if you look at his tweets for the last few days he has been having girlfriend or relationship issues.

Yeah, I hesitated posting it because you never know what things really mean, but I've already gotten into a couple healthy debates with friends about the QB situation because of it so I figured people might want to BS about it here too.

Well now that it's between the season and spring practice it's time for him to focus on his academics.

Maybe that's what he meant about a lot of thinking.

It sure would put us in a bad spot for at least 1 year if he left. But I don't think it's the wrong move to start Denard, ever, above him. Honestly he's been less than exciting when in the game and his playing time has consisted around trying to just not make mistakes.

Let's not forget we do have another scholarship QB on the roster, Bellomy, who might not be the best QB ever but he'll at least have 2 years under his belt by the time Denard graduates. That would leave him and freshman, shane morris, to fight for the position. I'm not exactly opposed to that.

With Morris coming in (as much as I don't want to see a true freshman start in 2013) the bigger issue if Gardner transferred might be next year's backup situation. Say what you want about Bellomy, but if he's seeing any significant time in 2012 we could be in serious trouble.

And I know Gardner has played pretty poorly so far, but I'm not going to base his future potential on it one bit. If he's groomed for the starters role I don't have any doubt that he'll be ready to go in 2013 and be a force.

I hate QB controversies.

This year was bad enough, and if we struggle on offense again next season, I only expect it to get worse, to the detriment of the W/L record. So if he does leave, at least there will the silver lining that we won't have one.

But regardless, why would he really want to transfer anyway? Seems pretty clear he'll have a year as the starter in 2013 at least... and (as much as I hate to even say it) there's always a chance Denard could get hurt

Yeah, next year it would be bad if Denard got hurt but having one really good QB with an inexperience backup is not that far off what most teams have. Look at this year's Wisconsin, Penn State, MSU....I think the bigger issue is that, right now, we rely on Denard for so much of the offense no matter what QB is in there they wouldn't be able to produce like him.

We still need a few years for our lineman to develop and get a really good RB in there to handle the load before we can really think about having a productive system outside of Denard.

I really don't think there will be a sniff of a QB controvery next year. Some people here might imagine one, sure, but this is Denard's team. I bet we see a big difference in year 2 under Borges.

If Devin's not getting his medical red-shirt he could transfer this year, use a regular red-shirt, then start somewhere else for two years. That extra year could make a big difference for his NFL prospects.

Regardless of what other teams are dealing with, the dropoff from Gardner to Bellomy would be huge, IMO. And your assertion that the offense it too dependant on Denard would only make that dropoff a bigger problem.
