We're moving to Texas next month.

Been interviewing/looking for a new job in Chicago for the last year; had some interviews but nothing panned out. I hate my current job, am substantially underpaid, and my boss(es) have made no efforts to address my concerns about workload, pay, etc. over the last year. (consider my extensive posting history here one passive aggressive response to that).

anyways... I decided to consider finally consider relocating outside Chicago about a month ago, and of course the first out-of-state opportunity that comes along is in Houston, of course and they love me, fly me down for interviews, throw money at me, and don't stop calling me til I accept their offer. With two kids, more money and a lower cost of living is not really an offer I could refuse. But the whole thing is ironic isn't it?

The average IQ of the state is going to skyrocket once I get there.

I lived in Houston for 6 weeks way back in 1981 and that was what everyone ordered lol... all I remember in between going to the local parks and playing hoops all day then looking for work for a hour or so.. Then working out again.. got homesick and left...stupid probably lol. .

Thanks, Bob.

And yeah, it's pretty much what I thought. Houston (at least) isn't really redneck-y on account of all the transplants... but it is crass. All subdivisions, and strip malls. No real neighborhoods in the traditional sense of the word. No sidewalks, not walkable, need a car to get anywhere or do anything. You can practically smell the hydrocarbons just walking around.

You fly into George Bush International Airport, get your rental car (not one of them hybrids neither), and you burn gas. Also you better be some kind of Christian.

silver lining: KAWDUP, Gulo_Blue, and Byco can't say to me anymore "Durrrr, stop making fun of the south. you don't know what it's really like here. It's nice, and the people are educated and cultured despite what you think. Stop being so mean."

Why the hell would you even interview in a city you are going to hate? Sorry, but you already knew these things.

I wish you luck, don't get me wrong. Just remember they love their guns so you might want to be a little less vocal, at least relative to the DSF persona.

Houston and Dallas are decent places though. You might find yourself enjoying it, once you are able to speak again after the swelling of your tongue goes away...cuz you are going to be chewing it like a cow chews cud. Lol

like I said above, it was about the money. it was a pay raise AND a solid company, and I can't really afford to turn it down, esp. given how long I've been on the job hunt, with kids to support and what not.

Thanks. I like guns too though, so maybe they'll keep at arm's length from me as well. an armed society is a polite society, right? so I'm told... I'll put up a "Guns don't kill people" and other gun-nut signs in front of my house, next to the "Bernie Sanders '16" one, and my Darwin-fish flag. they'll know to stay off my lawn.

And it's good we're moving now, when the heat is breaking. We get some time to acclimate ourselves to the new climate, which is basically a swamp.

and we get to miss the Chicago winter.

Best wishes champ. Moving like that is never easy nor overly enjoyable unto you get settled. Texans are generally friendly though, so hopefully you find the community to be a better place for raising your family. Not that Chicago is terrible (beats NYC that's for certain), but Houston could be better.

It will be a struggle grooming the kids to follow UM and the Packers...only so much influence you will god there. Lol

huh???

anyway, I don't think it will be that tough. It's not like I root for evil teams... it's easy to love Michigan and everyone can root for Green Bay.

You can live in South Africa for all I care.

Hope everything works out for you and your family MichChamp. It will be an adjustment for sure for all of you. Kids in grade school or older? New school, friends, etc.
Hope the job is what you've been waiting for.

Here's the little ditty with the singing cowboy Gene Autry and others.

Thanks, KC! Kids are young (0 & 2) so they have time to grow. we can be there 5 years or so and move back up north without it being too big of an adjustment for them.
