About time someone got with the times, these teams are in for a rude awakening in coming years. Between tickets, bullshit service fees, parking, snacks, etc. I think fans are just about at a breaking point when it comes to shelling out big money to watch a game. Especially with bad products on the field. I looked forward to going to a Wings game at LCA but I’ll be damned if I’m dropping $100 and up on one ticket alone to watch a garbage product.
It isn't just the admission, it is the concession prices that is at issue.
Local Syracuse AAA game is $14 for the high end seats (non-luxury boxes). But when a soda is $5.75 for any size whatsoever, then prices start to escalate.
Same with MLB pricing. Even if you get reasonable price on seats, a drink, hot dog and fries/popcorn can easily add another $15-20 or so. It is not unusual for a family of 4 to spend $200 and up for a visit.
In 1970, the same cost for that family of 4 was less the $80. In some cases, it was under $50. And all of this does not take parking into account.
In 1970, most teams barely topped 1 Million in attendance. 2 Million was virtually unheard of. Today, top teams routinely draw 2-3 million fans.
DET did not draw 2 Million until 1968 and then in 1984 (a trend?). They did it 4 of 5 years from 1984-1988. They next did it the last year of Tiger Stadium (1999) and the first year of Comerica (2000). They have drawn 2 million every year since 2005. They have even drawn 3 million 4 times since 2007.
While a nice gesture by the Orioles, they even said it is month to month. It is harder to get good attendance in April, then it is in July and August. Let's wait until then to pass judgement. Let's just say I skeptical they have the same offer in August.
I diverged for a moment. They want to have an impact, price their beverages and food for the "kids". Even if the seats are free, the team is counting on the revenue from concessions. How many parents/grandparents get out of the game without buying food, beverage and a souvenir? $30 for a kid's T-Shirt is a crock.
