"Nobody blames what happened in September on Tito,'' Epstein said referring to Francona. While Epstein suggested the clubhouse environment and shape of the players was an issue this year, he said he bears some responsibility for that.

Epstein also said, "We don't believe in scapegoats"

Uhh...yeah, suure....that's why a manager who led their '04 team to their first WS win in 86 years, and then won another shortly afterward, as their skipper in '07, is getting the heave-ho... ::)

Mitch[/color]]Does step down mean the "heave-ho"?

Officially yes, he's stepping down, unofficially, no, he is getting the ziggy for the team epically failing to clinch the WC, IMO... :)

From what I have read recently, it sounds like the Red Sox players have gotten too bug for their britches. Complaining about travel arrangements, not using the conditioning coach, drinking beer during games they aren't appearing in. Sounds pretty awful.

Sounds Francona is a sacrificial lamb for a bigger issue. I think he is pretty happy to get away from it. He won two titles and will probably get a new gig pretty easily. Lots of people are mentioning the White Sox

They are worshipped, canonized, nuthugged and sword swallowed by everyone from fans to writers/media etc. so for some that goes to their head and those one act like primadonnas.
from what I read and also heard there..
Have been a few grumblings about this going on in the clubhouse from ortiz and a couple other players. to the effect this never happened before within.
Whoever the biggest culprit is, I would think he gets traded, or if a FA isn't resigned.
but all this could not happen to a bigger dooshbag fan base.

I don't give a shit about the Red Sox - I hate the Red Sox actually - but this is just stupid.

Two world championships and a lot of post season appearances - the Red Sox are not gonna get anybody better.

But good, fuck 'em, I hate the Red Sox anyway.

I do some business with some big Beantown fans, so I'd appreciate it if nobody told them that I posted this...

Here's Schilling's response....not that much different than mine, but he was an insider...

See what these men are truly made of. A guy who took bullets and knives to the face and back for you for 8 years was made the scapegoat.

Oh btw, don't be fooled,CHB has had an ear to ear smile for 3 days, in his glory, now able to return to his old bitter shell of a writer self.

CHB = Curly Haired Boyfriend of Carl Everett, Dan Shaughnessy

The White Sox will be looking for a new manager. If they still think they have the core players to make a run they make go after him.

redsox, francona, epstein links from saturday.
from mlbtraderumors

Wow...so Theo Epstein wants to become and apparently will soon be the Cubs' new GM?!?

If so, Cubbies fans will be creaming in their jeans with visions of finally witnessing their historically inept franchise very soon afterward, enjoying seasonal success and perhaps even a couple of near-future postseason teams succeeding to secure those ever-elusive WS wins...heh!!

This is really something. Francona lead them to two WS and this is his reward!?
Who are the Dumsox going to get to replace him??????????
This one is one for the books.

redsox exit strategy deplorable.
boston.com

lucchino throws all who leave under the bus.

Couldn't have happened to a more "deserving" pro-sports franchise, as well as their arrogant RSN fanbase, IMO.
::)

Perhaps due to all of the controversy and internal discord within the Red Sox FO and clubhouse, along with the Yanks' aging stars and SP deficiencies, fans of the Rays, Jays and the Orioles may have very good reason for more hope of seeing their teams become more competitive, if not contending within the AL East next season, of course much depending upon what transpires, (or not) during the off-season.

Looks like VMart is a very smart and intuitive baseball player, when he was quoted as saying after he signed with the Tigers, that he believed that they gave him the best chance of winning a WS ring, when everyone and their mother in the sports MSM was all but crowning the Red Sox as '11 World Series champs prior to spring training...haha!!

true story, about 8/9 years ago I found out where larry lucchino lived in boston. I talked with the mailman about him and the mailman told me that lucchino was a cheap arrogant prick but the wife was nice. That's all I needed to hear. Saved up about 3 months of cigar stubs and ashes, put it all in a sweater box and had it delivered to him with the return address as theo epstein yawkey way fenway park boston ma. I wrapped it so when he took the wrapping off the box would open and all the cigar stubs and ashes would come out all over him. I grew up after that episode ;)
f'n crazy but my po buds roared.

I thought Francona was good on the TV for games 1 and 2. He provided a nice break from Tim McCarver's Tiger hate. It was pretty funny to hear Tito kiss Leyland's ass.
