Can a man who has been arrested for cruelty and torture of animals, sent to prison for federal weapons charges, been warned 30 times the past year and numerous more times over the last decade to get his animals under control, continue to own cheetahs, grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, lions, a white Siberian tiger, chimps, orangutans, camels and giraffes. Now those animals, except for the chimps and orangutans, have escaped and are running around town. No way this could have been avoided by taking the animals out of his custody years ago. Keep up the good work Zanesville, Ohio!

I feel bad for the animals. They're put into captivity by this dumb ass Ohio person - and then they're freed only to be shot for it. It's pretty lame.

Yeah it's extremely lame. Why was this jackass allowed to keep some of the most exotic and dangerous animals on earth? Including endangered species! He couldn't even properly care for cattle and bison, but yet no one steps in and takes the animals away. Unbelievably stupid.

What I found odd is that apparently Ohio makes you register the native species like Bears and Wolves - but he didn't even need a license for some of the more exotic (dangerous) animals.

Damn zanesville isn't too far from me. Glad there's a river between the lions, tigers and bears oh my.

And a few years back where I got my boxer puppy, they had 3 pet bears and a gator. One bear was 1000lbs.

Were these animals that you speak of let go from (Ohio) Columbus State Zoo? I hear there were problems there recently. I heard that the main zoo keeper resigned and went to the NFL.

according to another article I read, he had neighbors who have complained too.

The neighbors were obviously not important enough (i.e. wealthy enough) to get the city/county to arrest him, seize the animals, charge him and enjoin him from owning animals again in the future.

They probably didn't want to spend the few thousand dollars all that would cost.

Instead, they get to spend a lot more (I'm guessing) chasing these animals down, and shooting them... police overtime, gas, bullets, clean up, etc. etc.

This job calls for Sarah Palin!

This is funny.

Word is only 3 animals remain on the loose. Shame is, I wanted to take a Lion with my bow this weekend. Guess thats out of the question. I heard the Dude committed suicide and let the animals out first.

It is true in ohio you don't have to register exotic animals, I don't know why anyone would want a tiger anyway. I guess if I was Tony Montana maybe I would, but not until I become a drug kingpin.

Wolf and Monkey still loose, if anyone cares.

Monkey has Hepitias B is what the news said

I cannot understand why anyone would want to own a dangerous wild animal.

seriously, when I was a little kid, I might've thought it would be cool to have my own tiger... then I grew up.

I think that might be what's going on here: these types of people are mentally undeveloped.

Like the proverbial crazy cat lady, they have something seriously wrong in the head.

Did the police shoot the Siberian White Tiger? There are only 200 of those left in the world. I hope one of them didn't get shot because of some Ohio asshole.

This one story is bizarre enough, but the whole problem of idiots illegally importing and owning exotic animals seems bigger than you'd think. Have this sweet snake you bust out at parties and then one day you decide it's too hard to own a rare python or you're just 'over it' and you go let it go in the Arb.

And now there's some non-native african python in the Arb.

(okay, more likely to happen in Florida but still, same thing)

I have not grown up in this way. I wouldn't actually own anything like this because I understand the danger, but the appeal is still there for me.

the whole story disturbs me - from keeping the animals ot having to have them killed for being the type of animals they are

Agreed. It's sad every way you look at it.

I totally agree. What a moron that guy is. Poor animals. :( (If I see the giraffe, I'm totally keeping him! (Just kidding, though I do love giraffes)

Well I keep seeing a picture on facebook of all the animals shot down and killed. Not sure why they couldn't just put them to sleep and moved to a zoo or back to their natural home. Especially the less harmful ones like a zebra.

I was just at a zoo the other week with my son and they had zebras with no wall or fence from us (we were on a train ride). But yep, you sure gotta murder those damn killer zebras
