...... this seems to be an issue for our team this season.
 
What is worse, the team has a reputation for committing penalties which makes it more likely they will be called. The refs are watching for them and expecting them. This sometimes leads to phantom penalties being called like in the last game, borderline calls of targeting, roughing the passer, etc.
 
a friend of mine recently mentioned he feels like the Big Ten has it in for us.



I looked up my copy of Canham's book (he retired just before Delaney took over as the Big Ten commish), because I remember him slamming Delaney. He did, in two places... one he said something about how Delaney has no leadership ability, and another where he said Delaney was "no genius." Wonder if there is something there...
 
In 2016, after there was the uproar over the officiating in the UM-OSU game, the Chicago Tribune published a sleazy hit piece against Harbaugh, arguing the game was fair, and Harbaugh was whining about a single play when Speight turned it over three times. (link). ... no mention of the fact that the refs were Ohioans, and the lead guy was previously fired for incompetence.
Having the Trib go out to bat for you is like a classic hallmark of sleazy Chicago politics.
For whatever reason this is our cross to bear. Harbaugh said after the previous game, when asked about a bad call, that Warde Manual will take care of those, or Warde told him to leave the bad calls to him. Maybe things will get better, I don't know.
 
Michigan is getting called for a lot of penalties. Some of them are legit. Some of them are very questionable. Michigan's opponents are not getting called for very many penalties. They are not getting called for the same things that Michigan is getting called for.

Northwestern had 2 penalties. Both were in the first half.

This is not good.

It's a borderline miracle when the other team's o-line gets called for holding. I think Gary went almost 2 years without drawing a holding call, which is utter horseshit.

instead yesterday they called him for illegal hands to the face, which is bullshit.

and they showed the replay, and he was called for that while Northwestern's RT was pulling him forward by his jersey!!!

I just saw a stat that said over the past 4 years the Michigan defense has only drawn 11 offensive holding calls. That is by far the lowest in the B10. The next lowest was Northwestern with 18. Indiana and Purdue are leeding with 27. Stunning fact considering how dominate or defense is.
 
Big 10 officiating is either completely corrupt or completely incompetent. There's no other explanation.

The Stephen Pamon thing was in 2007, and it was shocking that he was STILL officiating games that late. (link to espn article that soft pedals Delaney, and he still comes off as an idiot)

Like it's THAT hard to hire refs who have no gambling problem period? You really need to split hairs?

Well, the guy has a lot of casino debt, BUT since it was at a casino that doesn't have a sportsbook, it's probably okay.

True, he also had a conviction for beating his wife and stepkids, but since we have high standards, we made him wait three years before he completed probation and got his record expunged before we re-hired him. We take ethics VERY seriously!
 
That was in the Big Ten - presumably one of the cleaner CFB conferences - in 2007! And that was really surprising how few ethical & compliance controls they had in place, allowing a guy like that to slip through.

You can only imagine how sleazy most refs probably are... I'm getting the creeps just thinking about it.
 
The holding call on Higdon that negated Patterson's 21yd run was inexcusably incompetent. He was the fake hand off on a read option and the defender took the bait and tackled him.


That call was so bad even Denver media picked up on it - including Joel Klatt who did color for the game broadcast.




And agree about the opposition OLine holding Gary and others. Nebraska got away with a few and I just assumed they were non calls because the game was out of hand. I would also say it seems the refs are less involved when we're playing SMU and WMU ..seems with the bigger games, the Refs play a much larger role - an insight made by the lovely Mrs Victors while watching the SMU game.

The refs were very involved in the SMu game. I seem to remember a lot of penalty flags being thrown, mostly against Michigan. I guess I'll have to check the boxscore.

It all added to that game being nearly unwatchable, like the Northwestern game. This move to FOX is very bad. They think they have to have 3 hours worth of commercials to go along with an hour of football...
 
perhaps it was WMU but even then M had 7 penalties, more than WMU

You could say that, but I don't really think that is the point. The question isn't whether every single call is legit or not. All of us have admitted that some of the penalties are legit. Some of them are not, though AND the refs are not calling the games equally. Northwestern had 2 penalties called. Are they really that much more disciplined that Michigan? Well, no, because we all saw them holding and grabbing on a lot of plays. The refs just weren't calling things equally.

Those running backs on fake hand-offs that get tackled should be more disciplined than to hold the person that is tackling them...
