No team in their right mind would trade a pick of expected equal slot next year for one this year. That's like trading down in the draft without getting extra picks. This year is very weak on top prospects.

An expiring contract only has value if it allows the other team to dump long term salary. Teams weren't willing to part with even late first rounders for cap space this year.

Also, a second rounder or two have very little value. The expected contribution of 2nd round picks is so low that is amazing if they even stay on the team for more than a couple years. now consider where current players would be drafted in next year's draft (based entirely upon expectation of next year's class). Nerlens Noel likely wouldn't crack the top 3, probably not even top 4 with his current injury. The likely #2 pick this year (McLemore) is probably most similar to SG Aaron Harrison, who right now is just outside the top 10 next year.

We have the 7th pick this year, which right now is about as valuable as the 15th pick next year. Would anyone trade a top 8 pick for 15 and some second rounders? No. This is a bad year to pick high, and next year is a great year to pick high. Hopefully we either make the playoffs or bomb out back into the top 8 next year.
