RedSox to interview Lamont for manager

I hope Lamont gets it but not because people seem to hate his 3b coaching skills or lack thereof. I think he would be a good fit for their current roster. He is good with the veterans and probably would do a great job. I just wonder if he fits from a large market media standpoint.

He managed the White Sux and Pirates previously, so I think he'd be fine in Boston.

I'm wondering who would fill his spot should he leave. Also wondering if we'd allow Lloyd to go with him and who might fill that spot.

You think if all that would happen, Brookens would move to third as coach, Larry Parrish or Phil Nevin first base coach, or thinking outside the box Leyland's BFF larussa as bench coach?? Maybe finally bring Bull Durham up to be the batting coach?

The Red Sox have narrowed their managerial search to two finalists, Bobby Valentine and Gene Lamont. Olney says some of GM Ben Cherington's peers (with other teams) are wondering if Cherington prefers Lamont while his bosses prefer Valentine, and, if so, whether it's worth it for the GM to fight ownership for his choice.

Mitch[/color]]Why have a GM if they don't let you hire who you want?

The Sox are a clusterfuck, but it's not that rare. Tons of owners but into decisions and micro manage.

LaRussa as a coach would be pretty solid. I'd be fine with the others as well. Probably no chance that Van Slyke comes back, right?

I don't think so chuck. iirc he left because his kid(s) were getting older and he wanted to spend time with them.

Why would Larussa retire after winning a title as a manager so he can become a bench coach? Friends and all that makes little sense to me. Would love it but still no sense.

It was just a thought mitch, as I said thinking outside of the box, if anything maybe for a year to help out his BFF. yeah but probably a long shot.

That's what I recall too. He supposedly wrote a "tell all" book about the 2008 season that might have pissed some people off too. Haven't read it, but read something about him writing it.

It could be a great job for a GM/asst. GM in waiting should DD get the commissioner job and Al Avila move up.

MLB whispers: Is Gene Lamont's stock rising with Red Sox?

Bobby Valentine's a star with a big personality. Gene Lamont really isn't. And who knows? That might actually make Lamont, third base coach for the Tigers, the favorite to be the next manager of the Red Sox, a team desperately seeking a stable and respected leader in the wake of the late-season collapse that cost Terry Francona his job.

It's long been assumed the job would be Valentine's. But he has yet to be hired, which would lead a logical person to believe somebody in the Fenway front offices is having second thoughts.

Lamont, who last managed in 2000, is the safer choice. Now it seems possible he might soon be the final choice.

As henny youngman used to say for his opening line,
"take my wife/Lamont please".

Lamont is no longer a candidate for the job, reports ESPN's Karl Ravech. The position has not yet been offered to Valentine, but that appears imminent.

Now Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports that Lamont has not yet been told he is out of the running.

but on wbz-tv 6:00 PM they said that valentine was flying back from Japan.

Red Sox team source says report that Lamont is no longer being considered for manager is "not true."

Gene Lamont keeps sense of humor: "1st series of year is Tigers-redsox. I'll be there. I just don't know if I'll be wearing white or gray."
