Read an article...I think SI....Reggie Jackson questions whether some of his HOF compatriots (Jim Rice, Bert Blyleven) belong in the Hall. In it, he says BB does not belong in b.c he was not the most dominant guy of his era---then he says Morris was. Reggie doing some campaigning for Jack?? In the very least, showing some love.

By that logic only 1 guy should make the hall from each era then.

If Blyleven does not because he was not the most dominant guy of his era, how does Jackson make the Hall? He and Carew both started in 67, and Carew's career WAR is 76.6 to Jacksons 68.4 and Reggie played 2 more seasons.

Sounds more like Reggie carries some grudge against Bert, because while Jack was great, his numbers don't compare to Burts.

It is an interesting quote. Perhaps it was his way of endorsing Morris' candidacy. However, it got lost in his A-Rod slam.

Sometimes the numbers don't tell the story. I'm sure that most players in that era consider both great but Morris was considered to be better.

IN the AL during the 80's, most of the conversations were Morris, Steib - Steib, Morris. Morris was one bad ass dude who at the time if I needed a win, he'd be the guy. He was the definition of clutch.

Jackson was right. I wish Verlander had the bulldog attidude that Jack had. When Jack was on the mound, there was no doubt who had control of the game.

Reggie Jackson, AS voters, CY voters. Sometimes stats don't tell the entire story.

In this case, they do.

Blyleven was a better pitcher than Morris, and it isn't really close.

Just a dumb post, Verlander is a far better pitcher than Morris ever was.

LOL

All Star voters, seriously? The same people who vote in guys like Jeter last year when he was hitting like .220?

How about HoF voters?

How about WAR for Pitchers career rank:

Blyleven: 90.7 (12th)

Morris: 39.9 (145th)

The only time numbers/stats don't tell the whole story is when someone can't use them in a discussion.

Blyleven was not only better, but there is really no contest.

While they were playing Morris was regarded as a superior pitcher. It is reflected in what fans thought (5 AS vs 2) what Cy voters thought and what MVP voters thought. Morris was more clutch and had his best games when it counted most. Blyleven had superior stats but if you needed a win in a big game who would you rather have on the mound? I'm sure you will say Bert because of his WAR.....I trust what Reggie Jackson's opinion and what I actually observed.

A big game?

You mean like the playoffs?

Because Blyleven was a significantly better pitcher in the playoffs than Morris was.

Seems like he'd be my choice (and any logical persons) to start in a playoff game.

Btw, Reggie Jackson hit .222/.288/.407 against Morris and hit .214/.264/.397 against Blyleven, so he was a more effective hitter against Morris.

Considering Morris was the ace of the staff of 3 WS titles and had arguabley the best of 2nd best post season pitching performance ever I think Morris had more success in the post season. As far as Reggie....it kind of proves that stats aren't all that matters. He had a little more success vs. Morris yet he considers him the better pitcher.

Morris career playoff stats: 3.80 ERA, 1.245 WHIP, 8.1 H/9, 3.1 BB/9, 6.2 K/9.

Blyleven career playoff stats: 2.47 ERA, 1.077 WHIP, 8.2 H/9, 1.5 BB/9, 6.8 K/9.

Blyleven even had a better record in the playoffs than Morris.

If you think Morris was a more effective postseason pitcher, then you are an idiot.

Jackson is just giving his opinion like any of us would. Why are you getting so worked up.

Personally, If in a needed win I'd take Morris. The same way I'd take Isaiah over Jordan on taking the last shot. Just opinion, we all have him. Doesn't mean someone is right or wrong.
