Shohei Ohtani

that's a lot of money to defer. That said, I read that he makes $45M a year in endorsements. So, he is giving the team a better opportunity to sign more players. So, in the long run, it's probably a pretty smart move on his part.

But what this is doing they can add more top players because Ohtani is making $2m a year. Thus creating a super team. And limiting 3/4 team to compete for a WS.What a crack a shit.

The amount that goes toward the competitive balance tax threshold is $46M per year, so they really aren't getting that much of a break.

I also read that the deferred salary will not be subject to California state taxes if he isn't living in CA. He will save 13.5% in state income taxes. That is an astonishing $91.8M in tax savings.

Earlier in the week, the LA Dodgers signed Shohei Ohtani to a $700 mill/10 year contract. He is both a hitter and pitcher.

After having Tommy John surgery in 2018, Ohtani had a second surgery on his arm towards the end of this past season. It remains a mystery as to what he had done but his agent said it wasn't TJ.

Shohei will not be pitching in 2024 and will only be hitting. There is some question about his pitching future.

The contract is a unique one. His yearly salary will be $70 mill but he is deferring $68 mill of it every year for the entire 10 years. He said he is doing it because otherwise the Dodgers would not be able to afford signing any new talent. He is also not charging any interest for his deferred salary.

It is believed that in a decade, he will be back in Japan. There is some question as to whether this unusual salary arrangement is due to California?s high taxes and/or later moving out of the country that could change how he is taxed.

There is a full no-trade clause but should the 2 top execs who signed him to the contract leave the Dodgers, he can opt out of his contract.

Already, Ohtani has set a record for MLB?s fastest selling jersey. They are almost sold out at over $350 a pop.

There are certainly plusses and minuses to the signing.

Certainly, the amount of the contract is one, followed by his arm surgeries and his age (40) when his contract expires.

Consider that the Dodgers will be paying him $68 mill every year for 10 years after he retires which will be a huge albatross around the team?s neck for a full decade.

But he is an exceptional player having won most of the major awards, including 2 MVPs. And he is MLB?s biggest draw.

What do you think of the contract? Do the rewards outweigh the risks?

Is it a smart move for a team to try to win now while potentially mortgaging their future long-term?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Is the Shohei Ohtani contract a wise move?

Today, it’s about quick hits – bits of news that catch my radar during the week as well as connecting the dots re ongoing stories. Even the quirky.
So let’s get to it! Here are the most interesting topics that hit my radar over the past week………..

DOJ says Baseball star Shohei Ohtani iwas a victim of theft of more than -$16 million- by his interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. DOJ says NO evidence of gambling at all by Ohtani.

Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani's longtime interpreter and confidant, has been charged with bank fraud after it was discovered he transferred more than $16M from Ohtani's account to an alleged illegal sports book, federal authorities announced in L.A. court.

Shohei gives 13-yr-old fan memory of a lifetime: 'What the heck just happened?'
MLB.com

LOS ANGELES -- In anticipation for his first bobblehead night as a member of the Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani and everyone in the organization knew there would be heightened attention and desire to collect the item.
With all those eyeballs centered on Ohtani, the Dodgers’ superstar wanted to make sure the night was special in a meaningful way. Before Thursday’s loss to the Reds, Ohtani surprised 13-year-old Albert Lee, who has had three open-heart surgeries since he was 3 years old, and now only has half a heart.
Lee came recommended as a special fan by Dr. Gary Satou, the Director of Pediatric Echocardiography at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. Lee, of course, is also a huge fan of Ohtani and the Dodgers. His reaction when Ohtani walked into the Dodgers’ interview room was priceless.

The frenzy over those bobbleheads was crazy. Now there's bobbleheads all over eBay for hundreds of dollars.

Can you believe what Otani has accomplished?

Shohei Ohtani is the 1st player with at least 5 extra-base hits & multiple SB in a game since at least 1901.
3 homers and 10 RBI and stolen bases.
AND HE DID IT TO REACH 50-50!!!

Its a history making league. Acuna Jr. last season with his 40-70 and now Otahni. Judge has still had the better year.
