SI ranks all 32 starting QB's. Stafford ranked.......

There was a reason they dumbed down the system.. And we know why they did, our savior Matt Stafford. I'll be honest, he's not bright. Another reason he won't be better, Dub touched on it - he's inconsistent as hell. Most of his career he's been. Good game followed by a bad one and a meh. Or two good games followed by 3 bad ones.

And it's not the team around him..2011 should tell you that. They weren't so great yet he did well.. The Lions have enough good players for a QB to become elite, assuming the QB is good enough. Matt isn't.

Honest question.. based on what he has done to this point would you re-up him? Assuming he stays status quo?

I absolutely would re-sign him. If he stays "status quo"......the cost would have to come down, though.

Cant pay good players elite $$$......no matter what the position......especially QB.

You would also have to invest in a high round QB at some point soon.

I probably should have specified that but I don't see cost going down. QB, young-old-1 good year, they're getting paid.

It was a team effort that lost that game. Defense was good, but not as good as they were during the regular season.

Bottom line is Stafford got better protection (compared to Romo), had better run support (Compared to Romo), and had all his weapons were healthy. Yet Romo still played better than he did.

QB play was not good enough to win the playoff game. Playoffs is where you need greatness, we did not get that. He takes a chunk of the blame.

I agree 100%. Key word being "chunk". I never denied that

I agree 100% with this post.

I'm not saying Stafford played any kind of amazing game or anything......but there were a number of factors that accounted for that loss. Stafford is part of that too, of course.

Sam Martin 13 yard punt.
PI non call
Big play to Williams covered by Vaughn
Conservative play calling from both coordinators in the 2nd half.
Very offensive offensive line play in the last series.....and most of the game.
.......ect.

It certainly was not JUST #9. That's my point.

Don't forget the mugging that Smith put on Ziggy when Dallas scored that go ahead TD.

Stafford was not the reason why they dumbed down the system. That's completely idiotic

Then why? You have reasonable idea in that head of yours? They basically came out and said they wanted to cut down his interceptions and his number of throws..

I dunno Mitch...I remember when Staff was coming out, teams were impressed with his ability to break down plays and his football IQ. Learning a new system, is like starting a new job. You may have been in the same field as your new gig, but processes, terms, expectations, etc are all different and new. Takes some getting used to. I don't think Staff's intelligence, or perceived lack thereof, played into the simplification of Lombardi's system.

Lombardi said Stafford picked it up quicker than anyone.

Lol. Doesn't mean he's dumb. Every coach wants their QB to throw less picks and not have him chuck it up all game. A good running game lessens a QBs throws. Less pressure on the QB is a good thing.
And Lombardi already came out and said Stafford was wayyyyy ahead of the curve. There's 10 other guys on the football field when the offense is out there. It's not all on the QB. Learn the fucking game for the love of God....please.

If you think Matt Stafford plays the qb position the way it's supposed to be played you've been watching Lions football too long. Those wow plays that he does every so often to keep guys like you on the hook are supposed to be consistently made through repetition of mechanics and footwork.

my guess is for every "wow play" he misses on 5 routine plays because of poor mechanics and footwork.

If you want to "learn the game" like Tony puts it you watch guys like Brady and Manning. So meticulous in every aspect of their play one guy got suspended for possibly deflating the ball to the pressure he likes it when the weather is wet or humid. Every one of their drop backs are the same, every delivery, every movement in the pocket. Caldwell was brought in to instill that in Stafford. It sure didn't take year one, let's see how he does year two.

Stafford isn't Brady or Manning though. There in lies the problem with you schlubs. When I tell Mitch to "learn the game", it had nothing to do with Staff's mechanics. We were talking about the playbook and how they had to dumb it down. Lombardi already came out and stated that he was way ahead of the curve. Even going as far as saying that he was shocked how much he had already absorbed. Even saying that he was ahead of Brees when he was in New Orleans. At least mentally. Stafford doesn't need to mimic Brady or Manning either.....different offenses. If he wants to mimic those guys, then he should mimic their work ethic.

Stafford is a gunslinger. Caldwell came in and reigned him in a tad. Cut down on his INTS and bumped up his comp % some too. Also, turned him into a leader who put together some beautiful comebacks. Something that never happened in the past with the nitwits we had as HC's. Keep crying over Stafford because he's not Rodgers or Brady. He's a very good QB that we can win with.

This will be the year Stafford stifles every negative Nelly on this board. He shut my food hole up with his performance last year. I am excited to see what he can do behind a decent O-Line and a viable rushing attack. I could care less about stats, I like to see wins from a QB.

So are you defending Stafford or not? This embodies the is the literal opposite of Stafford's career. Gaudy throwing yards stats with an 0-17 record against winning teams on the road, 0 division titles, 0 playoff wins. I think you may be more of a Joe Flacco fan myself.

His career record blows. So i guess welcome to camp negative nelly!
