Beyond that, when the coach says "take a knee" it's the equivalent of a sergeant telling a troop to stand "at ease."

In other words it's the opposite of standing at attention.

I know the "even Bush wasn't this bad" takes are often bullshit, used by hacks who supported the Iraq War to try to portray themselves as the moderate voice of reason under Trump... but I really, really hate Trump, and everything about him, from his bullshit fraudulent "personal brand" to the annoying, concern-troll way of speaking he has when he's trying to rally voters to whatever awful cause du jour he saw on Fox last night.

However, while I just said "it's intent that really matters", I do recognize the limits to that. If there are enough people interpreting it as disrespect, you do have to make an effort to explain that no disrespect to the flag is intended. If enough people are telling you that you are being disrespectful, you should reevaluate your actions. I just think in this case, the NFL players kneeing don't mean to disrespect the flag and Trump hasn't won the battle to completely alter what it means to kneel yet.
