Slay: I want to be paid like a top 7 cornerback

If the team was particularly smart, they would sign him to a new contract now. They could front-loaded the contract for 2016 ( we have free cap space, and any bump from his rookie contract can pay forward) and make the overlap years (with Ansah) a lot easier.

front loading a contract aren't the best idea when there are non-guaranteed contracts. First, if he sucks then you give him all of that money up front (guaranteed money + his bonus) puts all of the risk on the team. Secondly, when these guys get paid up front and in 3 years see they are the 25th highest paid player at their position they want to re-negotiate. They look at what they are making that year...not what they already got paid.

In the NFL...best to give a huge contract that isn't guaranteed. This feeds the ego of the player & the agent looks good but if they don't play well you can cut them.

Your right, Tom, it does present risk. But Slay is young and healthy enough to avoid major injury risk. Also, the team has no obligation to renegotiate. Players can't really afford to hold out before a contract year anyway. I see the risk, but I still think paying in this year (when we have plenty of cap space) to reduce the later years makes sense.

Not sure "he's young and healthy" is a prelude to staying healthy. Figure out a way to pay Ziggy. Have more money you pay Slay. 12.3 is still a lot though..

But it takes some off the money Matt Stafford gets in the future I'm all for it.

You're going to be really upset when Stafford gets extended lol

Yes but I expect it. If he can be more consistent I won't mind. And he really has to QB's are making so much money these days.. I rather have him be solid for 16 games rather than great in some, okay in some and average in others..

I say lock him up on a long term deal. By the end of the contract 12.5 a year will be a steal if he remains top 10.

Maybe wait one more year to pay him. That money carries over and lions have a ton of 2017 space. Franchise is an option for slay even with ansah costly 5th year option

Next year instead of asking for top 7 he asks for top 1.

Depends how he plays. 2014 or 2015

So if you are Quinn you are hoping he plays poorly? Isn't that what got the last genius fired? Well that and literally every other move he made.

Hell no!!! Then he goes out and has a Josh Norman type year and asks for #1 CB money. He wants to be paid like a top 7 CB....pay him then

No but he should be top7 again and then get paid like it later. Lions have options and the room wont be wasted. It carries over.

I would pay him now but lions wont lose him if they dont

Problem with that line of thinking is you don't usually get paid for what you've done at this point in a career that Slay is in. You get paid for potential BASED on what you've done. If he goes out and is a top 5-7 CB, you can bet he's going to get paid top 3 money easily by someone else. And he should be, he's 25 years old.

Just pay the guy. You have the cap space right now. I truly believe if he hits free agency, he's gone.

of course he is gone if he hits FA...why would he want to stay in Detroit?

He doesn't have kids enrolled in school, he doesn't have family here. Aside from comfort level with coaches and if we overpaid...he has no reason.

Unless he gets paid and then gets hurt or stinks. I don't mind paying him but I also don't think he's worth 12m+. If Quinn does it the NE way he'll just get other guys if someone ask's for more than he wants to pay.
