We haven't played with fire since the opening series agst. the Red Sox. I think the Tigers had been reading their own press clipping about how good they were going to be this year. Bad pitching and horrible hitting have us in a funk!!

The bottom 5 hitters in today's game were horrible (over matched). We had better turn this attitude around or this slump will last all year.

This last week watching the tigers was pathetic.

It was much warmer then, IMO they just don't like it cold, which is a huge problem for post seasons. think about it.

11 bad start (it was cold)
11 post season, offense funk (it was cold)
12 awesome opening series (unseasonably warm)
12 since then, bad start (it's the cold crap weather)

Heck even go back to 06... 06 WS offense total funk (it was cold)

They had Friday won until there were some mishaps in the field. The Tigers could have easily come out of the weekend in NY with a series win. I expect that coming home to KC and the White sox will be just what they need to get going.

If you look there is no correlation between wins and temps.

The best series of weather we had was in Chicago where our undefeated streak ended and we lost the series.

Which is good news and bad news.

Bad news is we cant blame the colder weather like we had hoped.

Good news is it probably does not factor into Oct. games either.

We are just in a funk, and need to get out of it and fast.

Thanks I thought it was warmer than that in the opening series. either way this sucks.

I wonder if the playoffs last year have affected Valverde and Benoit. Also, Verlander pitching 132 pitches agst. Royals hasn't helped.

I'm not going to panic but our middle infielders, catching and corner outfielders have got to start producing.

How do you expain the other teams doing so well then. Also Texas has quite a few players from warm weather areas and they did quite well in Detroit! This weather BS is getting old. Like find some other reason.

The team hasn't been as terrible as we seem to believe, the hitters just haven't produced when needed to or there have been poor bullpen choices resulting in blown leads and games to be blown open. The Texas series is a prime example, both of the first two games were fairly close until the 7th when Leyland decided to put Schlereth and the Rangers feasted. The series against the Mariners was ugly and the starters pitched poorly. This last series was a case of leaving waaayyyy too many runners on base, especially the first game where it came back to bite us hard.

Long story short, if the team can avoid sunday lineups and the bullpen can settle down a bit, the Tigers will cruise to a division title.

We aren't other teams and I wasn't attempting to suggest anything ethnic in that if that is how you took it.

I'm worried about Scherzer and Porcello. Only Verlander and Smyley are pitching well. Defense is average at best and the bottom of our lineup is BAD.

I agree.

I don't see the problem lying with the manager at this point. Poor starting pitching overall and atrocious defense.

That atrocious defense could be solved by playing Dirks in LF over Delmon, who is absolutely terrible in the field.

I'm more worried about Scherzer than I am Porcello, with Scherzer you don't know what you're getting. Max will either pitch lights out or give up 10 runs on any given start. His inconsistency is getting old fast and has cost us a bunch of games.

On the other hand though, the Tigers starting rotation should settle down with the return of Fister. I do believe we should trade for a veteran pitcher like Wandy Rodriguez, who eats innings and is very consistent with his stuff.

Do you really think changing the left fielder would solve the defensive problem? Arguably the least important position in the field? I don't think so.

Delmon blows, not doubt. But Boesch, Cabrera, Raburn, Peralta and Fielder all have very poor range. It's not like it was a secret in the spring. Defense will cost a few games. Unfortunately, there are only 2 of 5 starting pitchers doing their job.

It wouldn't completely solve it, but it would definitely help. Look at the first game against the Yanks and tell me LF is the least important position in the field.

Raburn is terrible at every position he plays so putting Worth there would upgrade that. As for Cabrera, his defense is average and if he can get to it in time the runner will most likely be out.

Fielder is hard to judge right now, but his range isn't very good, that I have no problem agreeing with. What I disagree with is that he is a poor defender, he scoops every ball in the dirt and he has a pretty sure glove.

Peralta is an OK defender as well, if he can get to it, the runner is out.

Boesch has the speed to be a good defender, but he doesn't take the best routes sometimes and he usually plays too deep, as shown in the first game against the Yanks.

It's unlikely Worth will be able to hit at the major league level. So, everything is a trade off.

It looks like you pretty much agreed that the defense is garbage, which was my only point. Of course, we knew it would suck. The starting pitching should get better and then we'll see wins in bunches, I think.

It's not like Raburn is hitting either though.

April 29th 2011 Tigers were 12-14...By May 2nd they were 12-17....We are all frustrated because we got off to a great start at 9-3... I am very worried about Max although in his defense if the Jeter pitch is called a strike like it should have 2 runs don't score.... Who knows how that games turns out.. The bottom of Jimmy's Sunday line-up was being pathetic today.. I could care less if JP is 1-17 verses CC he has a better shot at hitting it out the RS..

Well for starters Dirks had been hurt for several games.

Also, a manager has to manage personalities as well as lineup cards. So if he makes Delmon a full time DH because a bunch of people want Dirks in LF, then you have a pissed off guy in the clubhouse, and that likely leads to more problems. Delmon does not want to DH, remember how bad it got when Sheff bitched all the time about having to DH?
