small excerpt from Three and Out

Thanks for the link. Despite the program moving forward, this pisses me off every time I read or hear it.

friend of mine's dad and grandpa were in sports/arena management business in Detroit & the midwest for a long time, and they never liked BM. Both described him as arrogant, aloof, and unpleasant to be around.

The article seems to confirm that, given his approach. sounds like BM rubbed every potential candidate the wrong way, except for the one (1) who was as arrogant, aloof, and unpleasant to be around as he was (!) AND he probably only landed RR because the huckster was halfway ready to leave Morgantown when BM called.

I don't know whether or not Carr deserves any blame for the lack of a successor. The excerpt seems to imply that, but then there's this quote:<blockquote>What was most striking about that first meeting, however, was the number of candidates they barely discussed, if at all: Mike DeBord, Ron English, Jeff Tedford, Rich Rodriguez, and even Les Miles, the committee's first choice. "Bill didn't want him," recalls Ted Spencer, the director of admissions and a committee member. "I have no idea why. He never gave us a reason."</blockquote>So, regardless of whether Carr wanted Miles or not, BM never really considered him, or if he did, figured he could completely ignore Miles until he was back from Florida.

It seems odd that BM would've listened to Carr and ignored Miles, but then also ignored every other conceivable candidate that Carr could've put forth: DeBord, English... other former Carr assistants (?) or Michigan coaches.

I also see no mention of Ferentz in that excerpt, despite the rumors that he was Carr's favored replacement.

Yeah. It sounds like BM's approach was pretty thick-headed.<blockquote>"If I had to put my finger on anything," said longtime faculty representative Percy Bates, "it's this notion that, 'This is Michigan. Once the job is open, they're going to be banging my door down, and I'm going to pick and choose among all these great candidates. The only question is, which of these great coaches will I invite to accept the honor of coaching at Michigan?' But never having conducted a big-time football coaching search before, Bill may not have realized how it works."</blockquote>He did an okay job hiring JB the year prior... Maybe he actually conducted that search like a pro, and figured football would take care of itself? Or maybe hiring JB went unusually smoothly, and lead BM to think football would be just as easy?

I can't believe he was really blindsided by Carr's retirement either, despite the implication in the thread Red posted. I don't think Carr would've failed to give him a adequate notice. I remember the rumors prior to the '07 season were that BM and MSC persuaded Carr to stay on board for one more season after '06.

I just ordered a copy of the book on amazon.

Thanks for posting this.. Now My blood is even more boiling. How can one of the top Universities mess up so badly. Leaders and best. Not a very good moment in Michigan history .. I just don't understand and never will. Very frustrating that this happened..

it wasn't rumors
it was published that LC had wanted to retire and agreed to stay on

but even without bituce, there should have been thinking about the possibility

Well, most of this stuff we pretty much already 'knew' or at least suspected. Brandon and Carr didn't want Les as the coach...we knew this or at least the 'rumor' was out there and for good reason...The Carr contacting Rod thing, i guess we didn't know about that and the subsequent speech to the players that if they wanted to leave, he'd sign their papers. That's a little strange. We already suspected the Brian Kelly stuff. We pretty much knew that Bill Martin was in over his head. He was a bean counter hired to balance the books, not hire the next head coach of the winningest program in the NCAA.

Yes, I just opened my email and had this message: "Your Amazon.com order of "Three and Out: Rich Rodrig..." has shipped!"

Woo WoO!

Same here, even got it on same day shipping, definitely worth the extra 3.99

I've told you guys before, Bill Martin is a socially-awkward, REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER (not 'bean counter') who isn't very personable. He'd been involved in Olympics prior to UM's AD job, but he was a facilities guy, not a personnel guy. To that end, his legacy is intact ....M Stadium renovations, the beginning of Crisler's and the wrestling/volleyball arena. As for Ferentz, it was said at the time he and Mary Sue Coleman were (are) friends and that any discussion of his coming to UM were kept at that level and he wanted to stay in Iowa City (which clearly he is).

Yes I have ......you were within 25' of Martin's son when we were shooting turkey in A2.

why didn't you invite him over? I had more shot glasses.

"Hey, Champ, this is the son of the jackass who ruined Michigan football for the last three seasons!"

I specifically didn't want that precise scenario to happen.....BUT, he does live in Chicago, so ...
