So, how the hell do we stop Haas?

The dude is a powerhouse underneath the basket. He has finesse and really good feet. He can slam it in your face and block your shot. He is big time rally killer against us. Every time shit is going our way, he makes a play and Purdue hits a big 3. Do we take him out with a double team to the legs? Or do we call a hitman? Or, on a more realistic note, have Teske and Wagner on the court at the same time(just for stretches). Teske can have him down low so Wagner doesnt foul out early again. I don't know, just throwing shit out there.

Let him get his and take out the 3 point shooters. He can only score so many points...

While he is getting his 2's, hopefully Michigan is getting 3's

That Matthias character has gotten loose on us a couple times. We need to shut him down. Maybe Wagner can drive a little more at Haas and get that fucker into early foul trouble.

Haas is a beast, but stopping both Edwards is way more important.

I concur with everyone else. It's not about stopping Haas it's about stopping everybody else from going off as well. Both Edwards scare me a lot.

I don't care about Haas. It's the Edwards brothers that always destroy us. Harms beat us up pretty good too if I remember right.

I hope Haas gets into early and often foul trouble. Not because I'm worried about him carrying the game, but because he puts me to fucking sleep.

I knew some people would say this and it's totally valid. But when Haas is brutalizing your best player, that is the real difference in the game. Haas has the most points of any player through the 2 games at 41pts 12reb. You can give the Edwards boys their points, but when Purdue needs 2 to tie or to take the lead with a minute left, Haas is money everytime. It seems there is no one to stop him from getting that easy 2 points when the game is on the line. That was my reasoning for the thread. In my opinion he is their most important player. You take him out and Purdue is toast.

But that's just it. We can't take him out. He's bigger and stronger than anybody on our roster. It makes no sense to try and rationalize a way to stop him. You have to try and contain everyone else, and hope Haas just misses more shots than he takes.

Rationalise? I am talking strategy man, not trying to kill him. What puts him in bad spots? Wagner is faster, how does Wagner use that to his advantage? Shit like that. If you read my first post, I talked about maybe using Teske and Wagner for stretches to try and limit the fouls on Wagner. I think our defense is much improved from our games with them. I think, from how our D has been over the last month, we can have this guy on the bench for a lot of the game.
It's a message board I just thought the basketball guys around here would have some more insight. Like even maybe talking about why they think either Edwards is the difference.

I am more or less confident with either Wagner or Teske on defense at this point. It's Wagner who clearly has much more offensive potential at this point so the longer he is in the game the better obviously.

It will take a team effort to stop Purdue plain and simple. We can't let Haas catch it clean within 10 feet of the hoop, otherwise he will bury it more often than not. But I will reiterate, I am much more concerned with C. Edwards torching us from 3, and V Edwards grabbing offensive boards and getting put-backs, then I am worried about Haas scoring down low.

I am having visions of the 2004 Pistons when Shaq still dominated but Kobe and company did relatively little to help him.

How is he different from any great big giant jackass on Iowa, Nebraska, MSU or the five straight teams in row Michigan has beaten?

He can't be that good; it's not like Purdue never lost; they're the the three seed.

Michigan just beat the one seed.

The shit Michigan did well to almost beat Purdue twice, keep doing that.

The shit Michigan didn't do well in those games, don't do that, and do what the team did well instead.

yep, hit a few more ft and another 3...game over

maybe have Matthews cover Haas :)

If Wagner is hitting his shots it cancels out Haas. Haas can't guard Moe on the perimeter.

Teske may be able to bother him a bit in a pine tree vs oak tree type battle.

Well, we let him get his and then, reality will take over. Dude is 7'4" and 290 pounds. He just can't play for 40 minutes. He can't defend smaller players. Sure, he is a load when he gets the ball down low...until he gets worn out. He was worn out and rubbing his back at the end of the game. Poole bodied him up for a rebound, refs called a bad foul on Poole for just a clean body up and rebound, Haas landed on his back after getting roughed up by Poole, dude at 6'4 185 pounds of him, and that was all that Haas had...

I know it's really weird to say, but Haas can be a detriment for a team that has aspirations to go far. Even though he was pretty damn productive early, you can tell it just puts the entire team out of sorts. They end up standing around for minutes at a time watching him plod around. And when they are asked to do stuff, they aren't ready.

Also, he's just so slow to defend. He can't cover a guy like Wagner.
