The 2022 NFL Draft Thread

The Detroit Lions walked out of the first two nights of the draft with:

? PFF's top-graded college EDGE defender (Hutchinson)
? Arguably the best playmaking WR in the draft when healthy.
? PFF's 4th-ranked run stopping EDGE (Pascal)
? PFF's No. 1-ranked college safety (Joseph)

Here's how the trade ended up working out

Lions
12 WR Jameson Williams
46 DE Josh Paschal

Vikings
34 to GB for 53 and 59
53 (and 77, 192) to IND for 42 (and 122)

32 S Lewis Cine
42 CB Andrew Booth
59 OG Ed Ingram
66 LB Brian Asamoah

Pure Pick Position
32 S Lewis Cine
34 WR Christian Watson
66 LB Brian Asamoah

It will be pretty interesting to see how the careers of these 5 players turn out.

Just couldn?t get through a draft without a TE could we!? We needed more TE?s?

Knew a TE was coming at some point, decent value

James Mitchell Draft Profile
Mitchell shows plus athletic traits on tape, with good acceleration in and out of routes. He is a fluid mover who has WR-like route running abilities. His speed appears to be good enough to beat linebackers and work into the deeper portions of the field. Being a natural hands catcher who plucks the ball away from his frame, his size, athleticism, and hands play well near the end zone. He can contort his body to the catch point in ways many his size simply cannot. James Mitchell brings constant effort as a blocker, taking each rep personally. While he has some technique issues to clean up, his effort and work ethic make me a believer. Mitchell is considered to be highly coachable with a workmanlike demeanor on and off the field.

On the flip side, Mitchell can stand to clean up his route breaks and find more tempo in his route cadence. While he shows a lot of yardage after the catch, he did not excel at making people miss. Much of his YAC is from schemed up looks that opened clean running lanes. As a blocker, his lack of length has been an issue in the past. While he does possess strong hands, he will need to become a technician with his hand placement and timing in order to deal with longer defenders.

After four years, Mitchell?s traits have never truly resulted in a ?break-out? campaign. He has been solid at Virginia Tech, but he never broke through to reach his potential. Part of that may have to do with the torn ACL his senior year, but it holds true regardless. Mitchell might be drafted higher if not for the knee injury, and therein lies the conundrum that makes him a sleeper. While his risk is elevated due to the torn ACL, there will be an opportunity where the upside of drafting him outweighs the risk.

The thing about the NFL draft is, there?s Tom Brady, and then there?well, everyone ever drafted who wasn?t Tom Brady.

The Lions trade: Pick 181

The Eagles trade: Pick 188, 237

He actually looks like a decent play maker down the field. VT ran him on sweeps and screens alot too. Poor man's Kelce.... like really poor. We picked up a back up de in 2nd. Back up TE in 5th. Building out the depth... still have holes at starter.

Not a fan of aking so many injured players but like B said Hutchinson was hurt his sophomore season or junior season.

Couple of these NFL Network guys were alllll ready to talk about the Lions pick. That was funny.

Strengths

Shows a burst to close. Flashes explosive hitting ability and good lateral and downfield pursuit.
A bit stiff but makes the clean open-field tackle. Good effort in pursuit.
Greet feel in coverage. Often arrives at the receiver at the same time as the ball, giving up few yards after the catch. Possesses straight-line speed to stay with or chase down receivers in man.
Reads the quarterback to anticipate and is a candidate to play outside.
Reads quarterbacks eyes and reacts quickly to targets in zone coverage.
Weaknesses

Slips off too many ballcarriers and needs to complete tackles - will go for the big hit instead of consistently wrapping up.
Loses size battle to many tight ends and is easily pushed away on out routes.
Obvious size limitations. Willing to take on blockers but is easily driven out of the play.
Inconsistent hustle. Only adequate change-of-direction ability. Also loses his balance too often in the open field. Lacks size to bull rush stronger tackles.
More of a straight-line athlete with some stiffness in his hips to slow .his change of direction.
