I hope this is sarcasm. I don't feel like reminding people about elite wrs who were 3*s.

the multiple ?'s and !'s didn't give it away? Come on, let's dive into the whole conversation again how Michigan should only be getting 5 star WR's and how its more likely that a 5 star is an all-american than a 3 star.

Sounds like a plan.

Sam Webb this morning...

"I no longer think that there is any separation between Michigan and USC in this race. There's a true battle royal going on between these two."

For Isaac's Mom to say the area around SC isn't that bad and is just like any other urban area ....

Well, that's like saying the Museum of Science & Industry on Chicago's South Side and about a half-mile from Cabrini Green is in an "urban area" too ....

Ann Arbor and South Central LA where SC's campus is located are quite different places and campus settings.

All this said, $20 says he goes to SC.

I wouldn't take that bet, and its a shame.

Good article on Derrick Green.

BALTIMORE -- Two years ago, Derrick Green looked nothing like an invitee to The Opening. As a matter of fact, he didn't even look like a tailback.

Green, who now is 6-foot and 215 pounds, was once a 5-8, 268-pound offensive lineman. Suffice to say, Green, a running back from Richmond (Va.) Heritage who ranks as the nation's No. 83 player, worked hard secure his ticket to The Opening.

"It's a big opportunity for me," Green said about the invitation to the elite camp that features many of the nation's top high school football recruits. "I'm just blessed they picked me to represent Virginia. I'm just going to go out there and compete."
Green was selected after he participated in Saturday's Nike Football Training Camp at McDaniel College in Baltimore.

"I felt like I did real well," he said. "I was catching all my balls. My footwork was on point. I excelled in everything."

That wasn't always the case, especially when he was a chunky high school freshman.

Green, a four-star prospect, decided to lose the extra weight for two reasons. First, a coach with a good eye for talent noticed that even though Green was pudgy, he was still fast. Even at 268 pounds, he clocked a 5.0-seconds time in 40-yard dash. So Green was moved to fullback, where he got a taste of carrying the ball. Then, he met with a trainer in the offseason who asked him what position he played.

"I told him I was a running back and he said, 'Nah, I don't see a running back. I see a defensive tackle or something,'" Green said with his trademark chuckle. "My only words to him were, 'I'm going to show you.' I worked hard with him, lost the weight and cut it down. I just knew I couldn't be a running back at 268 and run a 5-flat. I had to do what I had to do."

Green's dedication to diet and training hasn't just moved the scale. It has moved massive amounts of weight. Green bench presses 330 pounds, squats 600 pounds and dead-lifts 615.

"Everybody says that's not legit, but we have a legit trainer that came from UVa," he said. "He makes sure you get low [on squats] and all that."

So how did Green, who ran for more than 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, transform his body? Forget Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers. He just went with healthy eating and exercising to become phat in the recruiting world.

For a recent interview, Green came to a restaurant and passed on a meal. He had already eaten his very planned-out lunch. Green also couldn't stay long. He had a yoga class to get to.

Aside from the usual work with his team, Green trains hours every week and maintains his weight by eating as many as three salads a day. As for fried foods, they're a thing of the past. Green drinks only water and will pass on soft drinks faster than he can run the 40.

How often does he splurge on his diet?

Rarely.
And when he does, he makes sure he pays for it the next day in the gym.

"The next day I was working out getting that weight off from that chicken I ate," he said of a recent time he veered off his diet.

Astonishingly, Green lost the 50-plus pounds in less than three months and has kept it off. Obviously, it has helped his game.

"I'm shifty, more powerful, more explosive and a lot faster," Green said. "I can make people miss and get through the holes a lot faster than my freshman year."

But don't start to think of Green as an all-purpose guy. He prefers to be known as a power back. He said he's never had the tendency to bounce runs outside in high school as so many top prospects tend to do.

"I was always downhill," he said. "If you look at my film, I'm not really a bounce guy. I'm a one-cut-and-go, real straight, north-south runner and I have the speed to kick it up in sixth gear. All that bouncing and shaking, I wouldn't say that was me. If you're in the way, I'm going to blow you up. I'm not going to try to shake you.

"At my school, they call me 'The Freight Train.' I like that a lot. I'm going to run you over and let you know I'm here. I'm coming."

Green and his family said he has consistently run the 40-yard dash in the 4.3 area. That wouldn't have happened at 268 pounds. Moreover, the weight loss wouldn't have happened had his family not been so supportive. The menu in the Green household has changed, causing Green's parents to lose a few pounds, as well.

"My husband and I said we just have to be more motivated because Derrick wants to change and break the cycle of diabetes and high blood pressure in the family, so we all decided we're just going to sacrifice some things we really like sometimes," Green's mother, Fran Green, said.

Green's father, Chris Green, doesn't just have to eat different. He's also often pulled into training with his son.

When Derrick read on a website that he didn't catch the ball well, father and son were outside working on pass-receiving for hours after work and school.

"He wanted to get better, so we had to take the time to get him better," Chris Green said. "The next camp he went to, they were saying he had hands good enough to play wide receiver. He accomplished that. He got over that hurdle."

Derrick led his family to better health, and he's also trying to inspire his teammates. He used to be the only player to run laps after practice. Now most of the team is joining him. When he gets his allowance, it's already spent. He buys food -- probably salad -- for the team on Wednesday evenings while they study game video. He takes his offensive linemen to Golden Corral if the team wins on Friday night.

As for a social life, don't expect to see Green at a night club. Aside from the occasional school-sponsored dance, it's all faith, family and football. Going out and partying doesn't fit the plan.

"He doesn't have an interest in those types of things," Fran Green said. "With the football team, he's making sure they stay out of trouble. He's a positive leader and motivator in that way."

The most surprising scholarship offer Green has received so far came from Oregon last month. Mom didn't even see that one coming.

"He was excited about Oregon," Fran Green said. "I was telling him, 'You're a big back. They don't run big backs.' So when he got the offer, he said, 'I told you, Ma.'"

The Oregon offer has given Green a lot to think about.

"I definitely know that's a school that's producing backs," Green said. "They run the ball. I spoke to the running back coach. He told me about the running back position at Oregon. That's definitely a school that's going to get the ball to the running back and run it."

Green isn't offering any hints as to where he'll end up other than he'd like to cut down his list soon. He said he'll visit Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon and Arkansas this summer and would like a scholarship offer from Alabama, which has shown interest lately but already has two tailbacks committed.

Green said he really enjoyed a second visit to Clemson last month and likes tough, run-first offenses at Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, but don't expect much more information than that, other than what he's looking for out of a prospective college.

"Academics are first and foremost because I promised my mother I'd get my degree before I even think about going off to the NFL," Green said. "Another important factor will be atmosphere, when I go visit. How is the atmosphere? I've got to have a good relationship with the coaching staff and mesh real well with those guys, as well as the players."

So what happens if Mel Kiper and Todd McShay tab Green as a high pick after three years in college? Will he stay in school?

"Yeah, I've got to," Green said. "I know the NFL is not going to be forever, so I've got to have that fallback. That degree is going to be my fallback, so I've got to get that."

Perhaps the best plan is for Green, who hopes to graduate from high school in December and enroll in college in January, is to graduate from college in three years and then enter the NFL draft after his junior season.

Want to see that happen? Just tell him he can't do it.

another on Green....

Green still interested in Michigan

2013 RB Derrick Green out of Richmond, VA is taking recruiting slow and enjoying the process. GBW talked with Derrick about some of the schools that he has visited and where the Wolverines stand at this time.

Talking with Derrick Green you get a laid back, never-in-a rush-with-his-words young man who is taking his time in choosing a school. He continues to pick up offers which is one of the reasons he is not in a rush.

“I am making sure I look at all the schools that are looking at me," he told GoBlueWolverine. "I have no favorites or a leader as of right now."

The Hermitage high school running back is up to 32 offers with most recent offers from Alabama, Miss. St. and Pittsburgh. He has visited Penn State, Virginia and Ohio State as well as Michigan (tho Coach Hoke was not there at the time). Green did talk about other visits as well.

“I went to the Clemson spring game recently and that was nice. I also went to Virginia Tech spring game about three or four weeks ago."

There is however one school that he visited that he still has a great deal of interest in, and it is a school up North.

“I definitely am still very interested in Michigan. I had a good time on my visit last time I was there. I had a chance to talk with Will Campbell, defensive tackle, and then I talked with Denard Robinson -- that was the highlight of the trip. Denard was telling me that speed was the difference in high school football and college football and that Michigan was the place to be. We had a real good talk when I was there. The Big House would be nice to play in, in front of all those fans."

The coaching staff and Green have not lost contact -- in fact Michigan called him last night to make sure of where they stood with him and his recruitment.

“Last night I talked with Coach Montgomery, and he wanted to make sure if they were still in the loop with me. I told him they absolutely were still there in the process. Coach Fred Jackson will be coming out next week to see me work out and go through drills. I do plan on getting back up to Michigan during the summer."

Derrick also talked about what has piqued his interest in Michigan -- the success they have been having.

“I just really like the fact that they will be going to a pro-style offense; Denard mentioned that to me when we talked. I am also building a pretty good relationship with Coach Jackson."

As Green continues to research and look at colleges he does have criteria for what he is looking for in a university.

“Academics first, I would like to receive my degree from the college I attend. I am also looking at my having a close relationship with the coaching staff. Playing time is important, along with the football atmosphere."

With the slow development of his recruitment, it seems quite certain that Michigan is right in the thick of things for the services of Scout300's #124 prospect, Mr. Derrick Green.

Where do they go from here - Offense (Ty Isaac postscript)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time for a readjustment.

Yes Ty Isaac was a loss… USC went from periphery to pole position in a matter of months. Deliberation over the weekend led him to the conclusion that USC was ultimately the place. In the end both schools had positives… favorable depth charts, big time programs, strong academics…

USC had coaches with pro experience,

Michigan had coaches with which he had longer standing relationships.

There were other factors that impacted the final choice… but the most significant just may have been distance. For a long time it appeared to be a factor in Michigan’s favor, and to some extent it was. But after speaking with Ty at length, I wonder if it wasn’t actually a positive for USC.

Michigan is closer to home, it would be easier less expensive for family and friends to come see him… but suppose it didn’t work out. Maybe that proximity increases the pressure for him? To fans, the notion that that there’s a discernible difference in the pressure one might feel at one program versus the other is far-fetched. After all, Michigan and USC are two big time programs that operate on college football’s highest plane. If anything, USC’s recent success makes being a part of that program more pressure-packed, right? But look at it this way… USC is in LA… a town where the focus isn’t all on the football team, they’re lucky to have 50,000 at games, and he’s thousands of miles away thousands from home and all those expectations. Again… there’s undoubtedly pressure and expectations at USC, but contrast that scenario with playing in a town where everything is about the football program, where 111,000 plus are at every game, where family, friends are a car ride away... that could be seen as a situation that is a little more pressure laden. It’s all a matter of perspective I suppose. I’m not saying that I see that way, or that you should. I’m merely saying that in retrospect, it’s the feeling I get based on numerous conversations with him.

Water under the bridge now, so moving on. So where do the Wolverines go from here? With 18 in the fold and the departure of Chris Rock, Michigan has at most six scholarships left. If a scholarship is awarded to Nate Brink that number would decrease by one, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see the Wolverines use six more scholarships.

How might the slots be filled? Lets look at it position by position…

RB: One possibly? Top remaining targets: Jordan Wilkins, Derrick Green

Michigan began working Jordan Wilkins a while ago and he brings versatility to the table similar to Isaac. We’re hearing that the Wolverines are in the thick of that race with Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, and Auburn. The following phrase will sound like it’s from a broken record by the end of this post, but repetition doesn’t make it any less accurate. They’ve got to get him on campus to increase their chances of luring him from the south.

Clemson and Virginia Tech appear to be out front for Derrick Green, but he remains at least somewhat interested Michigan. He obviously has visited Ann Arbor before, but Brady Hoke wasn’t present during that visit. Getting Green in for the full visit experience with Hoke could increase the Wolverines’ chances there.

Speaking of Hoke… the call to move on Deveon Smith when he did was a deft stroke. At the time Michigan was trumpeting taking only one more back. Michigan’s headman made a wise decision to adjust the numbers to make way for Smith AND Isaac. The bird in the hand call on a kid from a battleground state at a position of need was undoubtedly the right move in retrospect.

Another deft stroke was allowing Green to visit after Smith committed. When we spoke to Green leading up to his Ann Arbor visit, bypassing the Great Lake State altogether was being discussed because of Smith’s verbal. At the time the remaining running back focus seemed to be squarely on Isaac, and as we mentioned Hoke wasn’t even going to be on campus. Getting Green on campus anyway has Michigan in a place where it has at least a puncher's chance at the talented youngster.

WR: One possibly? Top Remaining targets: Laquon Treadwell, Paul Harris, Devon Allen, Sebastian Larue

Michigan is in the outstanding shape with Treadwell. Harris appears to be the most enamored with Michigan of the remaining guys listed, but will things move forward quickly enough with any of them to stand in the way of a Michigan / Treadwell marriage?

And defense....

Where do they go from here - Defense (Ty Isaac postscript)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DT: Two possibly? Top Remaining targets: Henry Poggi, Maurice Hurst, Wyatt Teller, Elijah Qualls

Michigan is in very strong shape with Henry Poggi. They may move into the catbird’s seat for Maurice Hurst if they offer. (We hear Michigan was in his school today, by the way). With Wyatt Teller it’s a matter of getting him on campus to see if the Wolverines can overtake the Virginia schools. With Elijah Qualls… (who we hear will have Michigan in his school sometime in the coming days), the question is, is he serious about distance being a non-factor?

DE: One possibly? Top Remaining targets: Joe Mathis, Alquadin Muhammad, Tashawn Bower

Joe Mathis almost committed previously, so he’ll be one to watch this fall. The Wolverines continue to show strong interest in Alquadin Muhammad (we hear that Michigan will be back at Bosco this week). Meanwhile Tashawn Bower is planning to visit Ann Arbor this summer.

CB: One possibly? Top Remaining targets: Kendall Fuller, Leon McQuay, Su’a Cravens, Cole Luke, Priest Willis, Maurice Smith, Kirk Garner, Darian Hicks

Along with running back, this is a position in which the Wolverines can’t be called the favorite for any one of the prospects listed. Michigan made up significant ground with Kendall Fuller during his spring game visit and went from being an afterthought to being a legit contender. That said, our Good Counsel contacts still say Virginia Tech is the team to beat. Michigan similarly got up off with the mat with Leon McQuay. Their sudden viability in that race could receive a significant boost with a visit to Ann Arbor. He and his dad were planning to be on campus this weekend, but at last check the trip wasn’t etched in stone. We’ll continue to seek verification in the coming days and hours. The Wolverines are in the top four for Su’a Cravens and he is planning to visit… but you’ve got to believe that familiarity and proximity will make USC tough to beat. Cole Luke and Priest Willis are firmly in the longshot category unless they can be lured to Ann Arbor for visits. Maurice Smith is an even longer shot, but the Maize & Blue ties at his school make it worth taking the shot.

Kirk Garner and Darian Hicks will be prospects to watch in the coming weeks and months. But have impressive offer sheets that don’t include Michigan, but they each maintain legit interest in the Maize & Blue. Stay tuned.

Maurice Hurst Jr

Per Tremendous:

Anyways. Why am I posting this update? I talked with Maurice for a split second tonight, who said he plans on visiting in a couple weeks. I also talked to a current commitment and they informed me that Maurice plans to commit to Michigan when he makes that visit. There is a strong possibility that he will be the next member of this class. He's definitely a name Michigan fans need to get familiar with.

As for rankings, he is listed as a four star and the 18th ranked defensive tackle by 247, a four star and the number 23 defensive tackle by Scout, a three star and the 24th ranked defensive tackle by Rivals, and a three star and the number 34 defensive tackle in the nation by ESPN.

TomVH confirmed this as well. Nice offer list including Ohio and Sparty. Would love to keep a lineman off one of their squads.
