The official Al Al for closer thread.

Nay.

Al Al's walk rate is too high for regular 9th inning work. We don't need another Valverde.

If Leyland can't realize the committee only works when using the right guy at the right time, I'd rather it be Dotel. But I think it's too early to give up on C by C yet, but Phil Coke has to be out of the equation.

Opposing managers are increasingly likely to make substitutions with RH or SH batters in the 9th when Coke is pitching, whether or not it is a save situation, and more often than not Coke will likely go flat, necessitating the quick hook from Leyland, IF he can, that is.

no one should be surprised that the no plan for closer plan didnt work.

this is the only part i dont agree with. Dotel's splits against lefties are almost as bad as Coke's against righties. He may have closing experience, but he shouldnt be our closer.

I agree his splits are not great, which is why I'm still in favor of the committee.

We brought in a baserunning coach, maybe we should bring in someone who can coach Jimbo how to ****ing use the bullpen correctly. I think the bullpen by committee thing is a great idea, it just sucks that he's ****ing retarded when it comes to using the right pitchers in the right situations.

Well here's to hoping it gets better once our starters start going deeper into games, and we have more options available/ready when we need them.

Indeed. As the weather warms up, their control should improve. I hope.

Somewhere, Papa Grande and Todd Jones are both sharing a beer and laughing at this situation.

The thing about closer by commitee: what happens in an extra inning game when you used three of your pitchers for one or two outs?

Cannot fathom why Jackson did not catch that game-ending double. He said some crap about "there were lots of people yelling," and "it was hard to hear (Dirks)."

I saw Jackson tip toe on a path that made me think he was walking on hot coals and not a sell-out sprint to the baseball. Disappointing, to say the least, since all the blame is being heaped on Coke and Leyland.

Its b/c the C by Coke-mittee issue is potentially long term, but the botched play in the OF by the Tigers LF & CF is unlikely to repeat itself often.

Well, in this circumstance, the OF blew it, too.

Al-Al isn't the answer, nor will a recycled Papa Grande. Rondon...well...maybe or maybe not, but the Tigers can't fall too far behind while waiting to see if he is gonna pan out while closing in the minors, much less in MLB. So..its still presently C by C or bust. I am genuinely shocked @ how quickly my giddy optimism for the season has all but vanished after the very first series. Tigers may well have been exposed by the twinks as pretenders, but I sure hope that won't be the case.

Al-Al is being used tenderly. He's often injured and Dombrowski wants to use him slowly initially, plus under less pressure than what the 9th inning generally features.
We will also see Downs and Dotel closing in the next week... bet on it.
