Tigers franchise leader in slugging percentage (.616) & OPS (1.028), & single-season leader in:
Home runs: 58 ('38)
Total Bases: 397 ('37)
Doubles: 63 ('34)
RBIs: 184 ('37)
Extra-base hits: 103 ('37)

Baseball Hall of Fame 1956.
Trophy2x World Series Champion Tigers 1935, 1945.
Trophy2x A.L. MVP, 5x All-Star.

Missed 4+ seasons to military service. Discharged 2 days before Pearl Harbor, he re-enlisted immediately after. Adjusted OPS+ of 159, tied for 15th all time with a guy named Musial. Would very likely have hit 500 HR but for the war.

One of those quirks of history that two of the most proficient RBI men in baseball history, Lou Gehrig and Hank Greenberg, were born less than 6 miles apart. Must have been something in that Manhattan water.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

While baseball fans wait for owners and players to finalize a new CBA, MLB Radio has been presenting a fun program called the ?Mt. Rushmore of Baseball.? Every day, they tackle 1-2 teams and select which 4 faces belong on Mt. Rushmore for each organization.

They haven?t gotten to the Tigers yet so why don?t we beat them to the punch?

But we?re going to do them one better. We?re going to list 5, not 4, players. Because?..

?it?s Five for Friday!

Here are the rules:

List your players in 1 column (1 player per line). Extra points if you alphabetize them (for tallying purposes).
Do not include comments in your post but you may respond to others.
Now, who to select?
It?s up to you. It can be players who have the stats. Players who embody the team spirit or have amazing stories and performance. Players you have connected with over the decades. Players from decades ago and/or recent years.

However, this shouldn?t simply be a list of your favorite players. This monument to the Tigers will be seen by everyone. It is representative of the team and its candidates will be judged against all the other 29 teams.

It should be a list of the players you believe are most deserving to represent the team.

In other words, think very carefully before adding Brandon Inge, Donnie Kelly Baby or other players with more sizzle than steak. Cult favorites not widely known by the baseball world need not apply.

We?re looking to put the 5 best faces on this mountaintop.

So as not to sway anyone, I am withholding my list in this blog but will reveal them next week when I share the winners of Mt. Rushmore+1.

Ready?

SATURDAY SURVEY.

A number of MLB teams go beyond how Cooperstown recognizes baseball greats. Many teams retire the numbers of significant former players whether they are elected to the Hall of Fame or not. Others have their own team Hall of Fame.

Despite being one of baseball?s oldest teams, the Tigers have only 13 players wearing the Olde English D in Cooperstown. Their policy is to retire only the numbers of players who got elected. They have made 2 exceptions with Willie Horton and Lou Whitaker.

Should the Tigers recognize more of their greats? Those who spent significant time with the team and contributed multiple great moments? Fan favorites?

If they did create their own Hall, would you pay to visit it?

In other words, if they built it, would you come? (Sorry, the line was just sitting there, begging to be used.)

Would you pay to visit a Tigers' Hall of Fame?

1. Yes

2. No
