Tigers 2023-2024 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Totally Tigers

Happy Holidays (or Happy Holly Daze as we say around here) to all of our dear readers!

Whether it?s Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or another holiday you celebrate during the month of December, we send our very best wishes to all of you during this special time.

And every one of you who read TT?s blogs are the gifts that keep on giving for us. It doesn?t matter if you comment regularly, sporadically or lurk silently in the background, TT loves you all and appreciates your loyalty. We look forward to keeping this blog fresh throughout 2024.

Here?s hoping that your holidays are merry and bright. And during this time (and with huge apologies to Clement Clarke Moore), may we dream that:

(sic) ?Twas the night before Christmas, when all through Comerica Park
Front Office execs were stirring, building a roster that not yet included Max Clark.
In hopes that top prospects will soon would be there;
The fans were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of new second- and third- basemen danced in their heads.

'Days of Roar' Tigers Podcast: Figuring out the 2024 Detroit Tigers with Bobby Scales. 71 minutes.
Freep

On this episode: For the final 2023 episode of "Days of Roar," Mark and Evan try to figure out which pieces of the Detroit Tigers need to step up in 2024.

The guys also talk recently-signed free agent pitcher Shelby Miller and the issues Evan sees in Scott Harris' plans for pitcher Jack Flaherty. Later in the pod, Mark and Evan are pleased to welcome Tigers radio analyst and former player Bobby L. Scales II to the show.

Highlights of the conversation include a player's perspective on the importance of timing as a batter and which current Tigers need to see if they can thrive at the major league level.

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris spoke effusively about newly-signed right-hander Shelby Miller after he landed in Detroit on a one-year pact last week.

Harris was particularly impressed by Miller?s performance with the Dodgers after coming off the injured list last summer. Miller?s final eleven appearances with the club saw him post 12 scoreless innings as he scattered seven hits and one walk while striking out 25.6% of batters faced.

Harris went on to suggest that Miller?s role has yet to be determined. The righty could compete for a spot at ?the very back? of the Tigers? bullpen alongside the likes of Alex Lange and Andrew Chafin or could be used in a multi-inning role. Miller recorded more than three outs in eleven of his thirty-six appearances with the Dodgers last year.

HARRIS? HIGHLIGHT.
Totally Tigers

President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris has now been on the job for just a little over a year.

Since then, he?s re-structured the organization both at the major and minor league levels, changed some of the Front Office personnel and broomed 3 major departments.

He has also addressed the roster, making changes at most positions and on the mound.

Harris has also changed the corporate culture and made the Tigers a franchise that players now find desirable.

But what do you feel is his single best accomplishment? You can select a more general topic or a very specific move.

Tell us what move you feel was the very best and in 3 sentences, tell us why.

by default, it has to be what he has tried to do with the player development side (we won't know if it worked for a few years), because he has not made any significant improvements to the major league team.

Team like Detroit needs to start winning before we get the better players to come. Harris is hamstrung now so we need to draft and develop right and then pull off better deals..

The Detroit Tigers have signed catcher (and University of Michigan alumni) Chris Molfetta to a minor league contract.

Molfetta only had 31 at bats last season in AAA, and will be joining the Erie Seawolves as their backup catcher to Alfonso.

The Angels fired Buddy Carlyle and Dylan Axelrod. They went to the Rays and Tigers in PD roles.

The Detroit Tigers have hired former pitcher Dylan Axelrod as their new Pitching Performance and Integration Coordinator.

The newest Tigers coordinator Dylan Axelrod was the assistant pitching coordinator with Ryan Garko when Garko was the replay coordinator for the Angels back in 2020.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

During this holiday break, we?re turning the tables and putting readers in charge of today?s blog.

The assignment is simple. Which 5 Tigers will you be watching with interest the most this coming year?

Will you be watching because they play exciting baseball?

Or will you be watching them because of their youth and promise?

Will you be watching because they really need to have a break out year?

Or will you be watching because they are the key to this team becoming competitive?

Your selections aren?t limited to the 26-man roster. Or even the 40-man one. You can dig down into the minor league rosters, too. But not too far.

Give us the name and a 1-sentence explanation of your selection for each player.

Hi Everyone. A few days ago, something extraordinary happened with the number of views to the Detroit Tigers Team Notes Thread reaching
3 Million Views.

I find this amazing for a Detroit Sports Team based theme and I want to thank everyone who reads this thread daily. All the posters from the site, and those of you who come by regularly to read all the Tigers news.

I waited for today December 29 to mention all this so it could be celebrated today, on the 17 year anniversary of when I began this long running thread back on the old espn forums in 2006.
