SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers
Several days ago, a national survey ranked all 30 starting shortstops. Tiger fans will not be surprised to find that Javier Baez ranked in the bottom 3. There were 6 categories and the bottom classification was ?trash? ? just 1 level under ?below average.?
We know about Baez?s struggles at the plate and his comments about being unable to see fastballs. Defensively, he remains a plus defender, but just barely. In his first year with the Tigers, he put up a -4 DRS. In 2023, it was +2 DRS.
But earlier in his career, he was often a double-digit plus defender. One year, he put up +31 DRS.
We know that the Tigers tried to sign Carlos Correa but he held out for a larger contract. He, too, had problems finding a new home for 2 years in a row due to significant health concerns. Eventually, he signed a 6-year/$200 mill contract that averages $33+ mill/year with 1 year reaching $37 mill.
In the national survey, Correa ranks as ?good?, the third best category.
Javy Baez has 4 years remaining on his contract and the Tigers still owe him $98 mill. The Tigers are paying him more than double what he was making as a Cub. He was signed by former GM Al Avila.
As you look at his record, both his offensive and defensive stats have been trending downward since 2020. He joined the Tigers in 2022.
Most agree that this was a bad signing. But what was the driving force behind it?
Which factor was most responsible for the Tigers signing Javy Baez?
Which factor was most responsible for the signing of Javier Baez?
1. Incompetent Front Office.
2. Inability to develop shortstops in the farm system.
3. Limited choice in players wanting to come to Detroit.
