Tigers 2023-2024 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender

Their problem isn't talent, it's health.

I used to be high on Mize, not so much lately. Never really liked Manning too much. I do like Skubal. I don't have much faith in either of the two additions.

Bottom line, I don't even see much talent outside of Skubal.

Projecting a full season of Skubal and Manning, Mize coming back and the addition og Maeda and Flaherty....do you think the rotation is better going into this year?

No. I think last years version of E Rod and Lorenzen are much better than Maeda and Flaherty. I have no reason to believe in Manning or Mize.

What are you basing your hate of Mize and manning on? Because it isn't on field production. Mize had a very good first full year 2 years ago and Manning has been really good the last 2 years when he's pitched.

And last off season you probably didn't think much of Lorenzen. You just never know.

Also, Erod and Lorenzen had career years with detroit last year. Lorenzen turned back into a turd after being traded(aside from his first start after the trade). He was so bad that he got moved to the bullpen. So maybe Fetter had a lot to do with that.

No hate, just don't trust either. Both have been inconsistent and can't stay healthy.

Bottom line is that our starters finished 16th in era and 6th in whip last year. That's with Joey Wentz(19 starts), Reese Olson(18 starts), Matthew Boyd(15 starts) and Alex Faedo(12 starts) being major pieces of the rotation. All except Olson were complete trash. Reese was probably our #3 starter for most of his run and now he's probably not even in the rotation to start the season. So if they were top 15 last year, calling them 11th this year isn't crazy.

a lot would have to go right. A lot!

Looking at the quality starts last year, the entire team had 44. #1 was E Rod with 14 and #2 was Lorenzen with 8. 50% of their quality starts are gone.

Believe me, I hope every single starter has a career year and stays healthy. I'm just not very optimistic.

Mize will be a key. He was turning into good before the injury. Hopefully the surgery works.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Baseball changes all the time. Big changes happen approximately every 10 years.

Changes in how it?s played. How wins are leveraged. How players are evaluated and valued.

How GMs assemble rosters. How skippers manage.

And how fans need to think about the game.

Yes, we also need to adapt and get up to speed.

There?s nothing worse than watching today?s game while still using the stats we grew up with and then puzzled over why a certain move was made.

Or wondering why Scott Harris non-tendered certain players last winter. If we looked closely, and used the stats that Front Offices use, we?d understand why they are no longer with the team.

Baseball has turned into an increasingly complicated game and as such, the past 20+ years have introduced formulas that are much more accurate and aren?t influenced by lineup factors or tell limited stories. They simply reveal a better and more complete story about a player.

It?s the New Year and there?s no better time than to update and use the stats crucial to correctly evaluating players. Today, we?re going to focus on the 5 most important stats for positional players.
