WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers
Over the last week, many of you joined the free agent conversations about Matt Chapman, who is currently a free agent and third baseman.
We know the Tigers have lacked for a solid 3Ber for many years now. It?s why Jace Jung has been moved there and is training extensively at that position. He is receiving positive reviews so far.
His brother is Josh Jung, who is a top defensive 3Ber in his own right. Josh is one of 3 who is coaching Jace.
PoBO Scott Harris has said repeatedly that the young top prospects will not be blocked in their development. However, Jace is still unproven at the MLB level. It is believed that he will make his MLB debut at some point during the 2024 season.
In the meantime, Matt Vierling will hold down the 3B.
Chapman will be 31 years old this coming year and is looking for a multi-year contract. He turned down the Blue Jays contract extension offer believed to be around 4 years/$100 mill.
Given that he rejected a qualifying offer, the Tigers would have to cough up at least 1 draft pick as well as money from their international bonus pool if they were to sign him.
He is projected to get 6 years/ $150 mill. His agent is Scott Boras.
He has 5 years of MLB experience and a lifetime .240/.330/.424 slash line. He just won his 4th Gold Glove.
Defensively, he is ranked #3 out of all MLB 3Bers with +12 DRS.
He has an above-average walk rate but also a high strikeout rate.
Given the Tigers? need ? and the uncertainty of Jung?s development ? should the Tigers go after Chapman?
Should the Tigers sign Matt Chapman?
1. Yes
2. No
