Tigers 2023-2024 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Does it make sense to re-sign former beloved players?

After 5 years in Boston, former Tiger J. D. Martinez signed a 1-year contract with the Dodgers. He had an exceptional year ? hitting 33 HRs and knocking in 103 RBIs. His slash line was .271/.321/.572. His OPS was .893.

Martinez is 36 years old and will be 37 at the end of next year. He is a full-time DH.

He is looking for a multi-year contract and has Scott Boras as his agent.

However, the Tigers are in desperate need of offense and J. D. could provide it.

Is it worth bringing back a former player who is older, limited in his role but packs a punch at the plate? Is it wise for the Tigers to return to having a full-time DH for at least 2 years?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Ready?

Should the Tigers re-sign J. D. Martinez?

1. Yes.

2. No.

I'll take DH and all. Need a DH anyway.. Better than 3 part DH's.

I get that, but I think the smarter way to build a team is having flexibility.

Here are the guys that I think will be splitting most of the time at DH this year

Carpenter
Tork
Canha

I'm with you on the future but as of now I'd love to get another at bat. No doubt we have players probably best suited for DH but I hate young guys DHing.

I think the Tigers are planning on bringing up Malloy and Keith this year. If they are up, I want them to have as many ABs as possible. If some of them are as DH, that is fine with me.

I think the only way I would want a full time DH is if the roster was stacked from top to bottom with guys that you just don't take out of the lineup AND they are a contender. A full time DH that has 40HR power would make sense in that scenario. The Tigers are a long way from that.

I actually don't like it so much having young guys DH. I hate it. Sure they might lack the defense but find a position for them. Put Keith at 3rd and use Malloy as a 4th OF or something. Keith has a good arm at least, ..

I agree with you. I just meant that these guys are going to need to be on the roster and they can get extra ABs as a DH.

If Malloy and Keith are on the roster you have these options for DH (when they are not playing in the field) because all of them are "hit first" players with what is considered to be sub par defensive skills.

Malloy
Keith
Tork
Carp

Tork and Carp already have starter spots. We have an opening at 3rd and 2nd and an OF spot. I don't think any of the 4 need to DH.

I think Canha will get a lot of playing time in the OF, splitting time with Carp.

Canha, Greene, Meadows will get the majority of the reps in the OF. Carp will get some OF but I think he will DH more than any other player. I think Tork will play mostly at 1B but they will get him in some DH as well.

If I were a betting man, I think Carpenter will be almost a full time DH. Probably 70% DH and 30% in LF.

I forgot about Canha. But I don't suspect Malloy do be anything but a bench guy to start. Also depends how much Baddoo plays..

I don't think Malloy makes the team out of spring training. Keith might. IMO, Malloy doesn't really fit the team unless he can really improve his D. I can see him being a guy that they trade at some point.

I'm ready for baseball!

I'm guessing Carpenter will get the most at bats as DH with the current roster. Canha LF, Meadows CF and Greene RF

that's how I see it as well. Nothing wrong with that. At least Carpenter can play in the field.

Carpenter actually played better in the field than I thought he would. If only Malloy could have a similar season at 3rd. I don't have much hope for that tho.
