Tigers 2023-2024 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender

Carpenter actually played better in the field than I thought he would. If only Malloy could have a similar season at 3rd. I don't have much hope for that tho.

I hope they don't even consider bringing Malloy up after spring. He seems to have a great idea what he is doing at the plate. Let him play in Toledo and have him work on his defense.

The fact that they didn't bring in a 3rd baseman makes me think he'll get a shot sooner rather than later. Vierling will probably start the season there. Malloy probably gets next shot.

people keep saying that Jace Jung is going to be the 3B at some point because they had him there in the AZ fall league. I don't buy it. Everything that I read is that he's a 2B because he doesn't have a good arm.

On this long holiday weekend, we welcome readers to share their thoughts about the Tigers or baseball in general. Your observations, comments and questions. Extra credit to those who create topics or questions that generate thoughtful dialog threads.

For this day only, a maximum of 6 sentences please.

I'm guessing Carpenter will get the most at bats as DH with the current roster. Canha LF, Meadows CF and Greene RF

Who knows. Reading the article above, how Tork is the worst 1B in the league, maybe they plan on him being the DH more often than we think??

I dont trust a lot of those defensive metrics. Watching him play, I never get the impression he's a bad defender. The guy scoops wild throws from Baez like an all star. 90% of his job is fielding throws. Who cares about his "range"?

I tend to agree with you when it comes to some of those defensive metrics. DRS says he cost the Tigers 11 runs last year which was the worst in baseball. I would love to see the breakdown of that.

Probabaly range. Lack of range will cost you in quite a few metrics. Also maybe does he turn the DP well enough.

Let the speculation begin.

Last week was the deadline for MLB teams to exchange arbitration numbers with their eligible players. And the Detroit Tigers finalized contracts with 3 out of 4 players.

All except for Casey Mize.

Remember him? The #1 draft pick back in 2018 who has only pitched 1 full season and a handful of games over an additional 2 years.

Mize last pitched almost 2 years ago. A lifetime in baseball.

They are going to arbitration over a difference in salary. The Tigers offered $815,000. Mize wants $840,000.

A difference of $25,000.

But don?t think that this is an instance of the Tigers being cheap. Don?t make that automatic assumption.

The Tigers are anything but cheap under the post-Covid, post-tear down and new leadership.

Fans don?t see it but Chris Ilitch has poured millions into the franchise?s infrastructure. The first owner to do such dating back to before we were born. Expanding departments, buying tons of new expensive technology and hiring the best executives, managers, coaches and specialists.

He?s even green-lighted huge expansions of personnel in multiple departments like player development, analytics, scouting and drafting. He is also funding the increase from 5 coaches to 11.

Ilitch hired both a President of Baseball Operations and a GM. He didn?t have to. An extra person and an extra multi-million dollar salary.

So it doesn?t make sense that the team would balk at a measly extra $25,000.

There is something else going on. And it?s why the Tigers are making a statement by staying put in their salary offer.

Let?s explore what possibly could be going on.

As part of the 10-year deal that Nike has with MLB, they are rolling out City Connect uniforms for each team. They are described as alternate uniforms that offer different color schemes, fonts and graphics and considered to be fun and ?fashion forward.? Nike describes them as ?reflecting the cultural aspects of each team?s home city.?

While the Rockies have black, white and grey uniforms with a backdrop of mountains, the Boston Red Sox have bright yellow uniforms with turquoise trim. Washington, DC has pink cherry blossoms splashed across the front of theirs. San Diego?s brown uniforms have given way to a tropical vibe of pink, yellow and mint green. The hats are green while the belts are hot pink.

Nike is the decision maker. It is believed that this strategy is to introduce new jerseys (and thus more money in sales) and attract a younger fan base. So far, the reviews from fans are mixed.

At the end of 2024, 23 teams will have them. There is yet to be an announcement about the jersey debuts for the Athletics, Guardians, Mets, Rays, Tigers, Twins and Yankees.

All teams are supposed to get their own but not every team wants one. The Yankees have made it known that they are against changing the pinstripe uniform.

As you see, the Detroit Tigers do not have a City Connect jersey yet. It is unclear whether it is due to their recent performance standings (thus not a big demand) or whether the organization is possibly fighting the update.

What do you think? Is a modern take on the classic Olde English D a good option to have?

Should the Tigers have a City Connect jersey?

1. Yes, I want to see a modern jersey.

2. I am hesitant about a change.

3. No, I don't want a City Connect jersey.

I vote no, but I'm a 55 year old white guy. I like tradition. If they want to appeal to a younger demographic, this is probably a good idea.

Well guys, I'm an even older white guy who was raised on tradition and I'm in agreement.
I think this is more Manfred looking for profits for owners and MLB and he/they don't care about tradition. They want to turn it into a circus....and I'm sure there are those who would welcome it for the sake of change.
You know what they say, opinions are like rear ends and everybody has one.

I couldn't agree more. That said, Manfred is doing what is probably best for the sport. The younger generation is different, and if baseball wants to attract younger fans, they are going to have to make some changes.

MLB isn't gratifying to the younger fans. It's not in your face instant action like other sports. Don't know how uniforms wil get young people to care about baseball. The clock change was the best thing they ever did.. That might work but not uniforms.

I think that the Old English D perfectly symbolizes what a new City Connect jersey can never emulate. Unity. The Tigers at times have unified this city and its surrounding suburbs like no other professional sports franchise in the nation.

Don?t dilute that with a makeshift, temporary treatment that will cause disagreement.
