Tigers 2023 Spring Training Thread

Matt Manning, who thinks he fixed his curveball, reflected on his development with Tigers as a prospect:

"I wish in the minor leagues they would have told me more. Just like, 'Go out and throw 50% curveballs. We don't care what happens, but you got to work on your curveball.'

Riley Greene: Mic'd Up. 3 minutes.
After his first season in the Big Leagues, center fielder Riley Greene is back at camp with his teammates. So we had him mic'd up during practice this spring and can confirm he wasn't a fan of it. But he delivered plenty of laughs in conversations with Spencer Torkelson, Parker Meadows, Matt Vierling and more.

How many of you return a day or two later to check the final results of our weekly polls?

We really have an excellent cross-section of fans and historically, this group of readers almost always tend to be spot on about what they see happening with the Tigers. I am hoping that those with offices at Comerica read what the fans are saying and consider it when they are discussing strategy.

As background, each poll is carefully constructed, offering the full spectrum of options as well as avoiding the possibility of leading readers to a specific answer. And they are also tamper-proof. Unlike the All-Star voting, it?s 1 reader, 1 vote. The blog platform kicks out any additional votes submitted by a reader who has already voted once.

Let?s now take the time to review all of the major polls completed in February. What you may find most interesting is the often-seen difference between how the overall population of fans feel compared to the published reader comments. Sometimes, the most vocal of fans are in the minority. Some of you may be surprised at what you see.

What is also fun to discover is how far apart ? or how close ? fans are in voting.

As you peruse the questions, it may also be interesting to see how often you were in the majority ? or in the minority. This blog has always been about exploring baseball more deeply and being receptive to different theories and opinions. Where one stands in each of these polls is a great way to expand one?s thinking about the game.

Here are the questions, with the winner and percentage listed at the top in bold.

What are the chances that Detroit Tigers Parker Meadows joins his brother Austin in the OF this year? Parker has had a great ST so far and hit his 2nd HR today. It was assumed he'd start the year in the minors.

Both brothers worked out with a new trainer in the off-season to noticeable change. Parker also tweaked his hitting mechanics. Having Parker on the same team would be the ideal answer for Austin who struggled last year with both physical and mental issues.

plus, defensively, he's a stud CF. It would really boost the outfield defense.

Jake Rogers starting hot in spring.

3-6 with 2 HR

I would love to see Rogers and Haas be the two catchers. If I remember correctly, Rogers is a really good defensive catcher??

Jonathan Schoop is in the final year of his contract that will pay him $7.5 million. Last season was his worst year offensively, however his fielding was exceptional and earned him a Gold Glove nomination.

Scott Harris has declared that any players going forward must control the strike zone. Twice now, A. J. Hinch has commented on Schoop?s inability to do such and pointed out that he left 40 walks on the table with 3-0 counts on him last year. More if you include all at-bat situations.

Jonathan has a 37% chase rate, a 28% strikeout rate and walks only 3.7% of the time which is last in MLB.

Several days ago, Hinch hinted that there may be changes should Schoop not improve. What is not being said openly is that Schoop may be platooned if things don?t change.

In any case, it is highly unlikely that the Tigers will extend Schoop after this year as they did after 2021.

He remains one of the Tigers? more expensive players and the organization must now have to consider trading him before the end of the year in order to try to get something in return. In need of acquiring as much talent as possible, they will probably not want him to walk and get nothing in return.

There is value in acquiring a top defensive player, esp. one who plays up the middle for a playoff-bound team.

So what is the best strategy for the team to follow? Giving him as much playing time as possible in order to showcase him as potential trade bait? Or giving him limited playing time (and thus decreasing his value) if he struggles at the plate once again?

What should the Tigers do with Jonathan Schoop this year?

1. Play him in order to trade him and get something in return.

2. Platoon him with a better offensive player.

Tigers pitching pulling an all timer in the 4th. 12 straight batters have reached for Toronto without an out. Vest and Higginbotham. Then DeJesus has an error on his first battery lol

don't worry...Harris is looking for players that control the strike zone.
