SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Winter Meetings start tomorrow and kick off what is known as the Hot Stove season.
The Detroit Tigers will be looking to start discussions and actions in their quest to add necessary players that will take them further in the 2025 season.
In yesterday’s blog, I outlined what Scott Harris will be looking to do. Three definite needs – starting pitching, an experienced infielder and a right-handed bat with some offensive power.
If you haven’t read it, check out the rationale for each need:
So which hole in the roster are you most anxious to see filled?

Which hole in the roster are you most anxious to see filled?

1. Right-handed bat w/solid offense

2. Starting pitchers

3. Veteran infielder w/plus defense

It's a problem when you know that they need Pitching and RH Hitting. Still a way to go to be a real contender.
I agree 100%. Honestly, I'm not worried about the RH hitting. Last year, Malloy, Ibanez, Tork, Sweeney, Meadows, Vierling, Keith, and Jung all had OPS over .717 vs LH pitchers. Vs RH pitching, only Carp, Green, Meadows, Vierling, & Perez had OPS over .700 last year.

Former Detroit Tiger Matthew Boyd just signed a 2-year contract with the Chicago Cubs for $29 mill. There is an option for 2027, a $2 mill buyout and incentives.
Boyd has been unable to pitch a full season since 2019 and has undergone several surgeries on his arm. In 10 years, he’s had only 2 winning seasons (1-0 and 2-0). He’s got a 4.85 ERA and 1.313 WHIP.
It’s a lot of money for someone with a history of injury, inability to pitch a full season and disappointing stats.

On the other hand, former Tiger Jack Flaherty is expected to sign a 5-year $115 mill contract with the San Francisco Giants. That will work out to app. $23 mill/year.
With Detroit, both Flaherty and Kenta Maeda earned $14 mill each in 2024. Both were considered reclamation projects, thus the lower salaries.

Which brings us to the Detroit Tigers. They need at least 2 new starting pitchers.
In general, the better the pitcher, the more money and length of contract he will demand. At least 3 years. Pitchers near the top will require 5+ year contracts.
At some point, hopefully this year, Jackson Jobe will hit and stick in Detroit. And there are others who made very quick debuts. Only time will tell how well they will do.
So which starting pitchers should the Tigers target for the 2025 season? Keep in mind that they will need 2 of them.
Also remember that the Tigers will need to add additional players, esp. bats.
We’re assuming that they will not go after the very top pitchers in MLB. They already have Tarik Skubal and eventually Jackson Jobe is assumed to inherit the mantle. It is still too early for this team to add the most desirable and expensive pitchers.
so what are the options?
Reclamation projects like Flaherty – 2 years @$15 mill/each (for a total of $60 mill)
1 Middle Rotation/ 1 reclamation project – 3+ years @ $24 mill/each and 2 years @15 mill/each (for a total of $132+ mill)
2 Middle Rotation guys – 3+ years @24 mill/each (for a total of $144+ mill)
With the focus on the 2025 season only, what category of pitchers should the Tigers sign?
Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

These fanside articles are mostly garbage. Almost none of what that person wrote made any sense at all.
