Tigers 2024-2025 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender, Awards

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Now that the Winter Meetings are behind us, the Hot Stove season is officially and fully operational. The month of December will be the busiest time for teams to be making deals and signing free agents.
If we exclude the signing of starting pitcher Alex Cobb, what 5 other players are on the wish list for the Tigers to sign?
I’ve got my 5……….

I know that Keith had a shoulder injury keeping him from going back to 3b, but wasn't that 2022 or 2023? Is this something that isn't going away?

Former Tigers left-hander Bryan Sammons signed a 1-year contract with the Chiba Lotte Marines (Roki Sasaki's team) in Japan. The deal is worth more than the MLB minimum salary and can max out above $1 million if he unlocks all incentives. Sammons made his MLB debut in 2024.

Former Tigers lefty will pitch in Japan in 2025.

Days of Roar Tigers Podcast: Winter Meetings recap: MLB insider Bob Nightengale on Alex Bregman, Tarik Skubal, Roki Sasaki. 31 minutes.

In this special "Days of Roar" bonus episode, Evan Petzold welcomes USA TODAY Sports MLB columnist and insider Bob Nightengale to recap MLB's Winter Meetings in Dallas. Evan and Bob break down the biggest news from the past week, including outfielder Juan Soto signing a 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets. Do the Detroit Tigers have a chance to sign third baseman Alex Bregman? If not, should the Tigers consider trading for third baseman Nolan Arenado? Why did the Boston Red Sox trade for left-hander Garrett Crochet? How is Buster Posey different from Farhan Zaidi as the president of baseball operations for the San Francisco Giants? Why did the Cleveland Guardians trade Gold Glove-winning second baseman Andrés Giménez? What is the free-agent market like for shortstop Ha-Seong Kim? Is Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki already a lock to the Los Angeles Dodgers? For more on the Tigers, Evan and Bob discuss 2024 American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal and the chances of a contract extension before he becomes a free agent after the 2026 season.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The rumors that the Detroit Tigers are 1 of 4 teams interested in signing free agent Alex Bregman have been confirmed. Bregman played for A. J. Hinch and 1 of his best friends is a coach with the Tigers.
His agent is Scott Boras who recently turned down a 6-year $165 mill contract extension from the Houston Astros. It is said that Boras is looking for a dollar figure that starts with a “2.”
Fans should expect that any new contract will be close to that $200 mill figure and around 6 years.
Bregman will be 31 years old by the start of the 2025 season. He plays 3B and just won a Gold Glove, leading all AL 3Bers in 7 major categories. He ranks 6th defensively at that position with a +6 DRS.
Offensively, Bregman finished the 2024 season with a .260/.315/.453/.768 slash line. His batting stats have been gradually trending downward. His walk rate has plummeted however he had one of the lowest strikeout rates in MLB.
The Tigers switched Jace Jung from 2B to 3B where he had a rough debut in 2024, leading the team in negative DRS. The Tigers have 2 other 3Bers in the minors but they are currently in A ball.
The Tigers infield leads MLB in runs given up. All of their fielders, save Jake Rogers and Trey Sweeney, are negative defenders.
Given these stats, timeline, resources and solutions, should the Tigers sign Alex Bregman?

I'm not sure on this. He can be a decent hitter even a very good hitter (.845 OPS over last 108 games). And he's solid defensive player at 3B. The big problem will be the years he'll most likely get. I don't care about the money so much, it's not mine .. but I don't want someone for 7-8 years. Not when he's 30 already.

Some of those teams might want him to play 2nd, at least that's what I hear. So to stay at 3rd, and maybe he really like's Hinch .. never know.

For the jersey number people…Dillon Dingler has apparently changed from number 38 to number 13. Last worn by Gio Urshela in 2024, but most famously worn by Lance Parrish (and Alex Avila and Eric Haase).

Seven Tigers have earned pre-arbitration bonuses for the 2024 season, according to the AP:
Riley Greene $517,846
Matt Vierling $327,719
Tyler Holton $322,695
Kerry Carpenter $310,609
Parker Meadows $276,802
Reese Olson $261,138
Colt Keith $242,569
