Tigers 2024 Spring Training beginning 2 - 14

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Spring training has just gotten underway with the rest of the roster and invitees to show up shortly.
Unlike last year, there are fewer positions truly open for the taking. But potentially openings may be created later in the year should certain players not work out.
The list of concerns to address in Lakeland is smaller than last year but there are still too many of them.
So what does A. J. Hinch have to evaluate/solve (hopefully) before Opening Day arrives?
I’ve got my list of the top 5 things.....

Riley Greene told me today he expects to play in Grapefruit League games once the schedule begins; he said the team is planning a blend of DH and outfield days.
Greene credited his offseason work with trainer Ben Delacruz for improved flexibility and running form.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Players from the 2023 Detroit Tigers’ roster are facing increasing competition during spring training this year.
Four in particular risk losing their spots to other players and being sent down to Toledo. In the meantime, the Tigers are graduating more prospects and adding depth to all areas of their pitching, catching and defense.

The 4 most at risk are:
AKIL BADDOO – He has already lost out a regular outfield spot as Riley Greene has been moved to the corner and Mark Canha was just signed.

ALEX FAEDO – He’s had 2 disappointing years on the mound and fingernail issues that have made gripping baseballs problematic at times.

CARSON KELLY – He’s got 1 year left on his contract and facing increasing competition from catchers being stockpiled in the minors.

CASEY MIZE – In 3 years, he’s only pitched 1 complete season. Now he’s returning from both Tommy John and back surgeries and hasn’t pitched in almost 2 full years.Meanwhile younger pitchers have started knocking on the door.

Out of these 4 players, which one has the most pressure to succeed this spring training in an attempt to sustain his career?

It has to be mize. The first three are basically backup type players. Mize was drafted to be the ace of the staff.

I voted for Mize. He is already 25 and hasn't pitched in two years. He won't pitch too many innings
wherever he pitches.

Keston Hiura, who signed a minor-league contract with the #Tigers, will earn $2 million (plus incentives) if in MLB.

Spent the entire season in Triple-A Nashville. He hit .311/.397/.563 with 23 HR and 79 RBIs across 88 games, 85 of which came with the Sounds.

Javy hoping to 'pick up the whole team' with rebound in '24.
