Saupold suffered a right groin strain. He appeared to be in a lot of pain. ...

Cameron Maybin left the game in the eighth inning after feeling pain in his left hand -- the left wrist was the one injured earlier in the year -- while batting in the seventh inning.
He finished the at-bat after a visit by trainer Kevin Rand but was replaced in the field by Andrew Romine.
Maybin said after the game the flare-up shouldn't keep him out of the lineup (via Katie Strang, ESPN).

Ian Kinsler -- HE HIT A GRAND SLAM! Kinsler's second hit of the game put the Tigers within a run, 9-8, after they trailed by seven earlier.

Miguel Cabrera -- A very impressive 449 foot home run in the first inning.

The Martinezes -- A two-run home run in the sixth by J.D. seemed to give the Tigers a little energy when they were down by seven. A solo shot by Victor Martinez in the eight completed the comeback and gave Detroit a 9-9 tie.

The Wilsons -- 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief gave the Tigers' offense a chance to catch up from the big deficit they faced.

Anibal Sanchez -- Avoided the sixth inning meltdown by being pulled after giving up six runs on eight hits (including three home runs) in three innings.

Brad Ausmus -- Left his closer on the bench in the ninth inning to save him for a great what-if. What if it didn't matter because a struggling Mark Lowe gave up a walkoff home run instead?

Mark Lowe -- Couldn't get an out in the ninth.

STREAKS AND STATS:
The Tigers hit five home runs: Miguel Cabrera, Justin Upton, J.D. Martinez, Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez.

Anibal Sanchez has now given up at least one home run in five straight starts, and allowed two home runs in back-to-back starts.
Nine of the 14 home runs given up by Sanchez have occurred in his last five starts.
Sanchez's 14 home runs allowed for the season lead the AL (but trail Max Scherzer of the Nationals, with 15).
This was only his second-worst start of the season. He went 2-1/3 and gave up seven runs on April 23.

The Tigers have dropped nine straight games at Angels Stadium.
They've also lost five of their last six games.

With a home run, J.D. Martinez extended his hitting streak in Anaheim to nine games.

My takeaways from this disheartening loss:

Sanchez is a mess. Perhaps a couple weeks in the bullpen to work on mechanics or something. I don't know. Only thing I'm sure of is the Tigers haven't won one of his starts in what seems like forever.

Mark Lowe is a bust. I could've hit that hanging slider he threw to Cron in the 9th.

Ausmus always managing by the book kills me! Justin Wilson was throwing BB's and had a very efficient 1-2-3 eighth inning. He couldn't have pitched at least the 9th? C'mon! The Tigers bullpen is like Russian Roulette......when you switch you have no idea what you're getting, with the exception of K-rod lately.

I know these guys are professionals, but a loss like this has got to be demoralizing to the hitters that brought you back from a 7-run deficit.

Nice to see the offense fought back, damn shame Sanchez is a mess, bull pen turned in the worst month of May in MLB..IMO though the bull pen isnt as bad as it appears the problem is they are over worked as the Sanchez and plefry are consistently not going deep enough..IMO pelfrey should goto the pen, Sanchez should go down to Toledo and allowed to go back to his more pronounced twisted wind up, when he gets it back again then maybe he can be recalled later in the year if needed

This team is a massive disappointment, thought McCann would hit better, iggy is having a terrible year, Sanchez and plefry are terrible, kza has been a huge bust, the bench is still weak as hell, and yup that's all it takes six major disappointments and the whole year is shot to hell complelty over shadows the bright spots
