MESSY MEDIA MESSAGES.
Totally Tigers

We?ve always known that there is a huge difference between the sports writers of the major local daily papers in Detroit and everyone else. So much so that if you really wanted to know the truth about what was happening with the Tigers, you had to seek out the articles of independent or national journalists.

The assumption has always been that the local press needed to preserve their ability to access the clubhouse so they essentially wrote puff pieces that wouldn?t melt butter in any Tiger official?s mouth. We?ve also read the stories about how the Tigers have influenced the editors at both papers about who covers their team.

Never mind that sports writers in other major cities have free rein with their topics and criticisms. Most don?t pull punches. For example, I live in a region where the MLB team?s stars, manager and owner have regularly been put under the microscope and chastised. Even when they were in the running to be the World Series champs.

But those specific Detroit writers are notorious for controlling what is revealed and preventing criticism from falling on team officials. It?s not lost on most of us that if the media had held fire to the feet of certain people like Al Avila, we wouldn?t have had to suffer for 8 long years.

Don?t just put the blame for why this team has been so bad for so long solely on ownership and the Front Office. The likely media suspects deserve a whole heapin? helping of guilt. Co-conspirators. Accomplices.

Much more to this story.....

this woman is ripping on "certain writers" for not calling out people (by name) that weren't doing their jobs within the Tigers organization, but doesn't have the balls to call them out by name for not doing their jobs? IMO, she's a hypocrite.

Seems unseemly to cast grenades at anonymous writers. Because they can't hurl them back. And it's no secret that many Detroit writers are organizational rubber stamps. So I question her motives in pointing out the obvious.

Tom why don't you tell her?

With all the fluff and gloss stories wwe have had to read and tolerate all these years with clown shoes running the team into the ground, the detroit news, freep, and mlive did me a favor by wanting to charge us for certain stories.
I thought why do I want to pay for this crap they put out?

Tom why don't you tell her?

I find her to be an interesting read (I read every time you post a link to their site) but have disagreed with her stories too many times and the TT site won't allow me to post comments anymore. One more reason I find her to be a hypocrite. She/the site only allows comments that agree with their narrative.

Help me understand why you neglected to name the writers you criticized. Not all of us want to traverse a paywall to read their stories. Thank you.

Well the Honeymoon is over.

Our new GM just signed Mathew Boyd to a one year contract of $10 Million!! What in the actual fuck?? This guy hasn't been healthy in 3 years.

Okay now that I have calmed down a bit;

The Detroit Tigers are bringing back Matthew Boyd on a 1-year $10 mill deal. PoBO Scott Harris signed him last year for the Giants but he went on to the Mariners where he had an impressive first season back.

Chris Fetter was not here back then. And this off-season, the Tigers have added multiple experts in the fields of biomechanics and kinesiology who should significantly help Boyd.

The new Asst. Pitching Coach, Robin Lund, is a professor and leading expert in kinesiology. He also coached his college team and sent 8 of his own pitchers to the majors.

The longtime Tigers lefty returns to the fold, but we?re a bit horrified at the price.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.

It?s interesting to read how so many fans are still holding onto the same list of roster needs that Al Avila had. Thinking the same way and selecting players that fit the old mold of the Avila roster years.

But this is a whole new ballgame. New(ish) owner, new manager and a new man in charge. Even new titles.

Everything is going to be new in this regime. Including the characteristics of every player who is signed.

PoBO Scott Harris has given us the parameters in a number of interviews and statements. Here are the top 5 things he?s going to be looking for before inking any player to the 2023 roster?..

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Winter Meetings start tomorrow and run through Wednesday. It represents the opening salvo of the Hot Stove season when teams start trading players and signing free agents in earnest.

Scott Harris has promised significant changes to the Tigers? roster. Already, he has cut 16 players from the 40-man roster and added 7 new. It is expected that he will continue to churn the roster during both the off-season and 2023 year as he finds better players.

But as he meets with other execs and agents in San Diego, should he also consider adding a significant free agent? Someone who would command a 4-6 year contract somewhere around $23-$25 mill/year?

Teams generally add those level of players when they are close to competing.

Or should he wait and instead sign a handful of solid veteran players to short-term (1-2 years) contracts? Players who will help the team advance in the short-term and then be replaced by better players in a year or two.

Which option do you believe will help the Tigers the most?

What type of free agent should the Tigers sign for the 2023 season?

1. A more expensive higher-profile player requiring a 4-6 yr. contract

2. A couple solid veterans with 1-2 year contracts.

I would vote 3-4 guys on 1-2 year contracts if the option was available.

CALCULATED RISK.
Totally Tigers

In his introductory press conference, Scott Harris said this:

?We?re going to make a lot moves, a lot of moves with strong conviction and confidence behind them. Some of those moves are going to be calculated risks. We have to take calculated risks to narrow the gap between this organization and the other organizations we?re facing right now.?

Pay special attention to Harris? first and last lines.

It explains why the Tigers signed Matthew Boyd.

So many Tiger fans are wringing their hands over this move. So many of them believe this is something that Al Avila would have done. So many of these same fans think it?s a return to welcoming back old players.

There?s just 1 problem with that. The only thing that last year?s Tigers and the 2023 model have in common is the name.

It?s an apples and oranges comparison. There is new leadership, a new Front Office, new departments, new resources and a new way of thinking.

If Avila was still in charge, the Tigers would never have had the intell to re-sign Boyd for reasons other than familiarity. Under Harris, you can be assured that due diligence was done. That has always been his m.o. He and his new top advisors are not known for making uninformed decisions.

Harris signed Boyd when he was the Giants? GM. While Boyd never threw a pitch for San Francisco, they traded him for a nice return from the Mariners.
In Seattle, Matthew posted a 1.35 ERA w/8 BB and 13 SOs in 10 appearances. His fastball averaged 93 MPH and his slider earned a 35% swing-and-miss rate.

Boyd is exactly the type of pitcher Harris wants. Someone who controls the strike zone. Remember Scott?s #3 tenet?

Matt has a high chase rate (over 30%) and a 28% swing-and-miss rate.
He?s stingy with walks.

How did he refine and improve his pitching?

While he was on the Giant?s IL, he used the team?s pitching lab to improve.

Btw, the Tigers never had a pitching lab. Until this year, they probably had no idea what it even was.

When he was traded to Seattle, his whiff rate only went up.

Boyd is yet just another example of Harris? excellent reputation of finding pitchers coming off injury or showing promise. In his short tenure with the Giants, Scott found multiple pitchers who went on to success, including Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood.

Let?s also remember that Boyd was non-tendered by the Tigers because they would have had to pay him $7+ mill for a year in which he would not pitch.
It had nothing to do with his talent.

Given all of the new resources now in place, Boyd?s pitching is most likely to improve. And Harris is hoping to repeat history with him.

But let?s also look at the intangibles Boyd brings to the Tigers. He already knows Comerica. And he?s a real leader.....
