Tigers Hot Stove 2012

See, someone who understands.

I understand what you guys are saying but If I'm trading a guy and he's a center piece, his lack of ML success would worry me. Even at his young age. The unknown is what makes a player have value. Just think if we used Maybin and what's his face more - would we have still gotten Miggy?

Andrew Miller got hammered in all his MLB appearances iirc.

And we don't know Turner is being used as a centerpiece, for all we know he may still be off limits. We'll know soon enough.

Tigers are scouting James Shields tonight, seems like a DD kind of pitching target. Established, top of the rotation stuff, and under team control for a few years. Would love James Shields in the old English D.

The Tigers intend to trade for a difference-making starting pitcher, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports (Twitter links). The Rays appear to be telling teams James Shields isn't available yet, Knobler adds.

The good news about Shields is that any deal would most certainly center around Rob Brantly instead of Castellanos. Any deal at this point to upgrade the rotation AND allow us to keep Nick would be a great move IMO. We could then more then likely make the trade for Infante and basically shore up 2 of our most glaring holes.

Would be a combination of Turner, Brantly and probably a mid level tier prospect.

get it done!!!

Shields I would think would be available for a couple B prospects. Outside of last season, he's pretty much been average.

The Rays are also saying Hellickson may be available and would probably cost the same as Shields would cost, but add in that draft pick the Tigers just won.

If I'm DD, I try to make a run at these pitchers

Felix Hernandez (Would cost too much though)
Wade Miley
Edison Volquez
Jonathon Niese
Ian Kennedy

Hellickson would cost a hell of a lot more then Shields to be honest. In trading Shields the Rays would clear up 3M this year and save themselves picking up his option next season for 9M and 12.5M in 2014. Also Hellickson is 5 years younger and under team control for the next 5+ years. It would cost probably 3 of our top 5 prospects just to get in the conversation for Hellickson.

Hellickson is also inconsistent and has a high WHIP, Shields when he has confidence in his fastball is a much better pitcher and is an established workhorse.

On top of the almost 4.5 ERA, I don't see what Shields gets us. He's not better than Scherzer, and would be marginally better than Porcello. He's not a piece that would put us over the top.

IMO, he'd be our number 4. I'm not sure you trade for a 4 at trade deadline.

I dunno, I wouldnt give up a ton for shields but I wouldnt not take him either. He's somewhat simliar to Fister in his style of pitching. Given how awful TB's defense has been this year, his mid-4 ERA is nearly a full run higher than his xFIP. Obviously our defense isnt that much better, but if we dont overpay for him I wouldnt say no to him.

If Shields can be obtained for a package that doesn't include Turner and Castellanos you jump at it and worry about the log-jam this winter because rest assured if we were able to land Shields before the deadline it would surely spell the end of Porcello or Scherzer considering both are in line for substantial raises this offseason and are both looking for long term deals.

I'd love it if we got Shields. He is a horse. He averages 226IP and 6-2/3IP per start and his career WHIP is 1.25, all of which are better than Scherzer. At a minimum, he'd be our #3 behind JV and Fister. Adding a #3 instantly upgrades your #4 and #5 by sliding them back a spot and dropping the weakest link out of the mix too.

You also have to consider that his career stats were earned in the AL East from '06-present. I'd have to believe they'd improve slightly moving to any other division in baseball.

From MLBTR.com...

Several teams, including the Tigers and Angels, had scouts in attendance for Rays right-hander James Shields' start against Seattle today, write Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Red Sox, Yankees, Pirates, Giants, and Blue Jays also had scouts on hand, indicating that Shields could be a hot commodity as the deadline approaches. As for Detroit, sources say that the Tigers have had interest in Shields for years and could ply him away with catching prospects Rob Brantly and James McCann. The Rays aren't necessarily shopping Shields but GM Andrew Friedman will listen to offers on him as well as Jeremy Hellickson, Alex Cobb, and Wade Davis, sources say. Here's more out of the AL East..

The way Max is pitching and has the potential to pitch, Shields would be our 4.
