Tigers Hot Stove 2012

I agree but my point was whether a GB or FB pitcher, probably doesn't matter much.

It does though.

With Berry in LF and Jackson in CF, our OF defense is around average, whereas our INF defense is the worst in MLB.

But some games we have AJ and a combination of DY, BB and Raburn. And mess ups in the OF can mean 2 base and 3 base errors rather than the one base error from the IF.

Its all the same - bad defense because even those fly ball pitchers, they get hit on the ground at times too.

if we get a pitcher, one with a fairly high K rate and one that doesnt give up as many grounders would be the right one to target.

or, if we got a pitcher who still gets groundballs but has a good K rate (like Dempster), that'd be ok too. richard is just a horrible idea.

Overall I think that IF defense is much more important due to the number of chances. Also, an IF error is usually a play that should have been an out vs an OF error typically being extra bases.

I know this is probably every fan's preferred route, but I hope we go big at the deadline. We are supposedly all-in. Fielder was reactionary, but it still seems silly to have the roster we have and be looking for mediocre replacements. We have two quality starters, and that's it. We have 3 consistently strong bats, and that's it. Almost all of our starters are in their prime already, and not going to get better than they are.

If we really want to win the championship, if we really expect to take down healthy Rangers, Angels, and Yankees squads in the postseason, we need more than Richard or Barney. What we need is a top of the rotation starter and a consistent bat at 2nd or in the outfield. Getting minor upgrades is unlikely to change anything from last year.

I think we're all in too but I don't agree with we have to win now scenario I keep hearing. Our core guys, JV, Fister, Miggy, Prince, AJ etc. are all under contract or team control for sometime.

Isn't this the last year of Fister's contract (and he'll certainly get a big raise)? Regardless, he still only gives us 2 quality pitchers. I would love to get Hamels. And if we are really going big, I would sign him to a big contract after the season.

Of course we need more but it's not like if we don't win a title this season or next we're done.

Next year will be the first time he's arbitration eligible. So he'll definitely get a raise, but the Tigers will have him at a good price for a while, likely offering a long term deal in a year or two if he continues to pan out.

It was one bad start.

Nobody would jump to conclusions if he threw 8 shutout either, it's 1 start, he had a 1.80 ERA after his other start.

He had what 4-5 starts in the majors since last year? I'm not impressed.

And yet he's not an MLB starter yet for a reason, he's not ready.

Spot starts are a tough task for a rookie anyways.

Bottom line is this last start changes very little about his future/projections, many people have jumped to clueless conclusions that he's lost all his value (he hasn't) or that he'll never be an ML player (he will). He was never projected to be an "Ace" type anyways, more like a solid 2 or a 3.
