Tigers Hot Stove 2012

I'm not a fan of Dempster. I think he's having a fluky year, and wouldn't trust him to keep it up. Also, at 35, he's too old to look at as an asset in future years.

I'd love to get a decent second baseman, and we should be able to get a passable upgrade without giving up the farm (Turner, Castellanos). Unless Turner shuts down the Angels tonight, I think it wouldn't behoove the team to find out just what our top prospects are worth. Can we get Hamels and get him to sign and extension? Could we get Upton or Aaron Hill? How about Grienke or Shields?

This team is all in, and despite the not-as-dominant-as-we-hoped bats, the offense is doing enough. Another 2nd/3rd starter and a reliable reliever should be enough to win the division.

Is there any type of Fister type deals? That's what I'm looking and hoping for.

I think the biggest need for the Tigers is a good starting pitcher.

We could use another solid starter, but I'd put more emphasis on an everyday player, rather than an every 5th day player.

A run producing corner OF'er/DH would be tops on my wish list.

If Hamels gets traded it will be because he wants to hit the FA market....he won't be signing an extension. Upton, Grienke and Shields will most likely start with either Castellanos or Turner.

Upton is the only guy i'd trade Castellanos for. And that's a huge MAYBE.

Someone was telling me a Shields deal would center around Brantley.

I'm not sure there are any Fister-types out there. Fister had a poor record pre-trade, which lowered the cost to get him. He was a better pitcher than his record, though, and we banked on that. There just aren't any guys this year with particularly poor records or fluky ERA (compared to actual pitching accumen) that would turn out well for cheap. And at this point (Turner/Smyly/Porcello/Scherzer looking pretty bad and Fister still seemingly hurt), I'm not sure we can afford to bank on getting less than a #2 starter if we want to just make the playoffs.

I think it's time to really just throw some caution to the wind. Turner's value isn't increasing anymore until he gets 100% healthy and starts throwing more strikes. But, he's not exactly a lost cause either as other teams can still see he has the stuff to be better. Castellanos may be very good, but he's also years away (this roster is built to win now, and most of our players are already maxed out). We may not be able to wait long enough to get Castellanos into the outfield. I'm not saying throw them away willy nilly, but Cole Hamels is a top of the rotation level pitcher.

This team is built for '13 & '14 when V-Mart is healthy. Trading their best prospect for a rental SP isn't a good move IMO
