Tigers In On Alphonso Soriano

In the last 22 games (july)

Boesch .299 avg / OPS .870 / OBP .325 / K 16 / BB 3

Soriano .274 avg / OPS .835 /OBP .299 / K 24 / BB 3

At least Boesch is on what appears to be an upswing..doesn't look like the time to be trading for an ancient struggling outfielder.

Small sample, you can't compare Boesch to Soriano and try to make a case for Boesch. You're going to lose that argument.

He was hitting well for a spell, and went back to sucking lately, that's been his story the whole season. Everytime we think he's out of his funk, he makes liars out of us.

Last 12 games he has hit .238, last 6 games he's hit .130, and that's dragged his average over the last 28 days down to .282

Granted overall he's had a decent July, .299/.325/.545/.870 but that was inflated because of a furious stretch, and then negated by the horrible one he's currently on.

Even so, I'm with beez on this one. I'll take Berry and/or Boesch before Soriano.

As I said, you make a very fair point..but I reeeally don't want a 40 year old Soriano unless he's catching fire that could boost the Tigers to the WS. Him hitting .270 the rest of the way and striking out a ton isn't enough of a move.

Thats fair, but I still don't see Soriano being a solution. Especially if you're oging to include Berry in the deal.

Why not?

Berry has no value as a corner outfielder, he'll just be another Juan Pierre, likely with a lower average.

But someone may want him in CF, the alternative is he gets benched when Dirks comes back [assuming either or both are not traded today] or he continues to play offering little production is a spot we desperately need it.

He's done a good job filling in, but why not move him while he actually has value?

Depends on if you're backing Mr. I's plan of "win now".

Long term I don't want Soriano, but I don;t have faith in Boesch and Berry putting us over the top.

I just don't think Soriano is getting much in return. He's not really hitting well enough to consider it a move to make the team much better in my eyes. Sure theres a chance he knocks one out now and then but I don't know. Seems like a move I'd rather stick with what we got than be stuck with him next season.

In no way do I think we win a world series or even get to one BECAUSE we've aquired Soriano. I don't necessarily believe it will happen with Boesch or Berry but whats the point of aquiring him if it's not going to make you a contender?

It's probably the 19 HRs and 828 OPS that would help the Tigers. BA is over rated at the #5 hole....you need some power there. I would be thrilled with Soriano if the cubs pay most of his salary for the rest of his contract. Let him play a little OF and DH. He can't be much worse in the OF than DY or Boesch.

I'll still take Boesch...had a rough start but seems to be picking it up. Not a good fielder but it is what it is. He's not Delmon out there. As long as Boesch hits he can stay.

Boesch is almost Delmon level bad.

Him and Lucas Dada are far and away the worst defensive RFers in baseball.

To justify his defense, Boesch would need at least a .360 wOBA.

He's not gonna get that walking less than 4% of the time.

Soriano would be a significant upgrade over both Delmon and Boesch.

Berry is a pinch runner.

I don't have a problem with Berry in the lineup. If Dirks comes back and can come close to what he was before he got hurt I would love to see a lineup like this.

AJ
Dirks
Miggy
Prince
Soriano
Alex
Peralta
Infante
Berry

after an 0 for 17, Dirks is 2 for 4 w/ a homerun today, and said to be running the bases fine.

If (big IF) Dirks can have similar success as he had before he got hurt having him and Berry in the OF and the lineup will make this a much better offense....and the OF defense would be significantly better. Any slight loss of power would be offset by adding Soriano in the 5 hole.

The rumor mill is circulating that the Tigers and Cubs are ?hard at work? on a Soriano deal.

Clubs ahead of Tigers for AL waivers: Twins, Royals, Mariners, Indians, Jays, Red Sox, Rays, Orioles. Good deals not likely to clear.

IMO something has to happen, we can;t expect to even win our division with what we have, we need to make some kind of move to even show we're still buyers, and trying.

I believe it's fair to expect a division title with what we've got but not a world series title. With a healthy Fister in the 2nd half I believe we have enough to win a AL central championship for sure. Not like it wouldn't be a fight but I still think they have enough to get it done.

Our problem is run production.

And with most teams pitching around Fielder because they know Young is up next, I don't see it getting better.

That said, it could happen, but the so-so's have to finally do something for longer then a couple weeks at a time. [Boesch, Young, Peralta, Avila,]

We could really use an 830+ OPS guy, but it just may be too expensive.
