Totally Tigers

It?s time to revisit the last week of baseball. Two series with the last game on Sunday. What stood out for our two bloggers? What do we need to keep our eyes on going forward?
Four observations apiece and just 2 sentences to identify each of them.
As always, answers aren?t shared ahead of time so let?s see how similar ? or how different ? Holly and Kurt are in their responses.

that was a game that gets me excited. Mize looking like he could be the ace everyone talked about, a rookie surprise in Baddoo still getting it done, and Miggy out of the lineup.

great game :)

Oh Miggy no love, lol. 4 more years that's a lot of wasted money.

thankfully, 2023 will be his last year. 2024 & 2025 are "option" years. He is guaranteed $8M in 2024. The options vest if he finishes top 10 in MVP voting in 2023. I think there is no chance he accomplishes that.

And you are correct, I have no love for Miggy.

Didn't realize they were option years. That's good. 2 more years then. I really want to see 3000 hits from in Detroit. But not sure he's going to get it now.

I'm sure he will...he has 2.8 years to get it done. Well, maybe 1.8 years...maybe they try to buy him out after next year.

I don't think that many, if any Tigers fans "hate" Miggy. But when he signed that 8 year contract extension in early '15, he was elite, productive and durable. It wasn't to last for long after that, unfortunately. But hindsight is everything, ain't it?

Some players who are elite will see their stats gradually decrease as does their skills and bat speed/agility erode w/age. Others suddenly become very brittle and more injury prone ala Guillen and have to be released, bought out if possible, or retire one or two seasons after their last that was relatively healthy and productive.

Baseball is a results-oriented business, yet many veteran players are paid based on what they have accomplished, not what they will do in the future....its a big gamble on the part of the ballclub when they negotiate long contracts, post prime years and it isn't always better to burn out, than fade away.

Sure but father time says it was a bad deal. You can't beat it. Why couldn't they give him 5 years. Like that Fielder deal. You get excited because we got a good player and kept Miggy but no one wanted him signed that long.

I do remember back then saying when he loses his power his skill set will still let him be productive. Just too many injuries.

Miggy Cabrera will likely be the very last Tiger to ever sign a contract that exceeds 2 or 3 years...unless the ballclub is eventually sold by the Ilitch clan.

As long as Chris Ilitch owns the Tigers, he will operate it as if it is in a small market ala the Rays, Twins, A's, Royals, and Indians. He has seen that all have managed to field contending teams of late, albeit with small windows for postseason success. Not like mid-market ballclubs ala Astros Mariners, Cards White Sox, and Blue Jays. Big problem is that these franchises have been doing so for their entire existence and have the necessary high level of MiLB infrastructure/technology, scouting, and player/pitcher instruction/coaching in place to pull it off.

The Tigers only recently have tried to build up their farm system with quality blue-chip prospects, especially positional players, and still lag woefully behind everywhere else. Their FO is comprised of people who cannot exactly be called "shrewd" either. Their past pitcher and to a lesser degree positional players who have managed to stick and enjoy long careers in MLB have done so b/c of their talent, and have succeeded in spite of their shitty minor league system, not b/c of it.

That's probably the way to go. If they can draft well it should work. We're at 81m and Miggy takes up 30m of that.

Though I'm not sure they lag 'woefully' behind everywhere else. They have the 2nd best ranked ml system right now according to "experts" that consists both of positional players and pitching. They're in a better position now than just a few years ago. It takes time after years of neglect and chasing the WS that never came.

I think they are doing it the right way right now. They had to build the farm system up first. They seem to be doing a good job of that. I have no doubt that the current ownership will step up and sign some players to longer contracts in the next few years. I certainly hope they don't dip their feet into the "deep end" and sign some superstar to a really long term contract. This team needs to build slowly. Let some of the young guys develop and add some solid veteran players. Plus...I doubt any all star caliber player will sign in Detroit until they prove to be at least a .500 team...and even then, the Tigers will likely have to over pay.

That should happen when you suck so bad for enough seasons that you pick in the top 5 consistently. The ballclubs who impress me are those who don't and aren't in big markets where they can grab the elite younger players who reach FA for the first time to overcome fucking up in trades, or all too often picking from the bottom in the draft.

The Tigers will likely at least be picking in the top 5-10 in '22, and top 10-15 in '23. Its not the first or maybe second round picks where a very good MiLB coaching/scouting/training/developmental system is needeed, but does for those picks below it

Remember we traded some 1st round picks and because DomDom traded away ml prospects. DomDom messed up our ml system as bad as Millen messed up the Lions.
