Tigers vs. athletics Game Thread August 29

Im baiting him now too. Trolling awful writers is fair game, especially with suggestions like that lol. How the hell does he even still have a job? I could probably write better than him while drunk off my ass (thank you, history degree.)

Can't troll a troll. Meaning it's not possible.

No. You dont move a better hitter down in the lineup and replace him with a much worse hitter (because Dirks' small sample size numbers in the 2-hole need to be ignored, just like all small sample sizes like that). And for what, MAYBE a few extra RBI chances? That will be evened out by the fact that Dirks will be on less in the 2-hole. And ordering a lineup like that just to mess with an opposing manager is pointless. Its an awful idea all around.

Also, protection is a myth. Its been disproven time and time again, could someone throw a link in again on one of those articles? I dont think I ever bookmarked one.

Dirks' OBP is only 24 points below Hunter's and thats with sporadic playing time.. meaning Hunter doesn't get on base often either, so why not let him do what he does best(drive in runs) in the 6 hole behind the 3 guys with the best chance of getting on base. It doesn't even have to be Dirks batting 2nd, but he has the best OBP of the 6-9 hitters. Dirks' career OBP is .332 while Hunter's is .335. Dirks is not a guy who drives in runs. He hits singles and takes walks and can also steal a base. Those are the guys you want on in front of Cabrera and Fielder. You want the medium power hitters(Hunter, Martinez) behind the bashers to clean up messes they can't at times. Just because Hunter hits .300 doesn't mean hes great at getting on base. As bad as Dirks has been this year, he gets on base almost as well as Torii.

I don't see how protection is a myth. Cabrera gets walked a lot less now that Fielder is in town. The fact that Fielder hits behind him means Cabrera gets more pitches to hit. Hence the reason this past 1 3/4 years have been Cabrera's best statistically.

Also, if both Dirks and Hunter each had 508 ABs(like Hunter does) Hunter would only have gotten on base 13 more times through the entire season to this point.
And protection is about more than just giving the guy ahead of you better pitches to hit. It's also about being able to drive in runs that the guy before you fails to.

Some things are hard to prove, and protection is hard to prove. Your theory is well represented and I respect that. However, I think it's all in the numbers. Cabrera may have seen the same number of fastballs and breaking balls or whatever.. but the fact is that more of them were in the strike zone. Less walks shouldn't even his value when those walks are turning into HR's. That theory in the first article is retarded.

The problem is, getting on base isnt the sole skill someone needs out of a player who hits in the two-hole. Since they get the 2nd most ABs behind the leadoff hitter, they need to be one of the best hitters on the team. Moving one of the best hitters down to the lower part of the lineup just to get what would end up being a small handful more RBI chances (because its not like he gets none in the 2-hole) just isnt worth it.

Dirks: .253/.322/.361/.683, 88 wRC+, .305 wOBA
Hunter: .308/.343/.474/.817, 121 wRC+, .354 wOBA

Hunter is CLEARLY the better hitter, and its really not close, which means he should be hitting 2nd like he has been all year. Dirks belongs no higher than the 6-hole except in rare circumstances. And I can just about guarantee you that if you DID give Dirks full-time ABs, his numbers would be much worse than they are now. He's a part time player at best.

You're forgetting something. Dirks is a LHB, meaning most of the time he plays he faces a positive platoon split. Hunter is a RHB, so the majority of his AB's are against his weaker split. And he's still far better than Dirks.

Hunters 2013 .OPS RHP: .788
Hunters 2013 .OPS LHP: .895

Dirks 2013 .OPS RHP: .690
Dirks 2013 .OPS LHP: .647

So if Dirks and Hunter both had the same AB's vs. the same pitchers Andy's numbers would not be as close as you think because he is terrible against LHP, where as Hunter can support an acceptable OPS against his weaker split, which is why Dirks is a platoon player.

Cleveland just lost 3-1, so our lead is at 6.5 entering this series. Lets put a chokehold on the division with a sweep!

Winning 2 of 3 would also be acceptable lol. We can't let them gain any ground.

Hard to believe that after all this crap series gave us right up till the final inning of the final game that we didn't end up losing any ground to Cleveland! Wow

This win feels as good as that 9-8 comeback, walk-off win a couple of years ago, and its pretty darn similar too. Down big by the 5th, chip back as bullpen holds the other team, come from several down in the 9th against a closer who had been absolutely lights-out all season long to walk-off! And we romped through september after that. Hopefully this lights a fire under the team.

Torrii Hunter told #Tigers reporters he was so excited running around the bases he nearly passed out.
