Someone please add Gameday....thanks in advance. cigar night back later.

Alex Avila and Quintin Berry weren?t likely to start against A?s left-hander Brett Anderson anyway, so just because they?re not in the lineup doesn?t necessarily mean they?re unavailable. That said, as long as they?re not starting, it wouldn?t be a surprise if both of them sit the next couple days until the Tigers face a right-handed pitcher again.

Tigers - a's Game Preview.

The Detroit Tigers have their ace on the mound tonight against the Oakland A's as they try to gain ground on the Chicago White Sox.
The White Sox have their ace going for them as well.
Justin Verlander (14-8, 2.82 ERA) will start for the Tigers tonight as they try to beat the Oakland A's, the hottest team in the majors, for the second consecutive night.
Chris Sale (17-6, 2.78 ERA) is scheduled to start for the White Sox as they continue their series in Kansas City against the Royals. The White Sox lead the Tigers by three games with 15 games remaining.
Verlander is 6-5 with a 2.56 ERA in 12 career starts against the A's and beat them the only time he faced them this season. Verlander allowed one run on two hits and one walk in seven innings pitched in a 3-1 victory on May 13 in Oakland.
Left-hander Brett Anderson (4-1, 1.93 ERA) will start for the A's. Just a handful of Tigers hitters have faced Anderson in the past. Delmon Young is 4-for-9 against Anderson, while Miguel Cabrera is 3-for-7.
Avisail Garcia is starting in right field against the left-hander. Gerald Laird is in the lineup in place of Alex Avila, who was injured Sunday in a collision with Prince Fielder.

I have a question on Garcia. Rod Allen mentioned that he will eventually hit for power. OK. But so far the kid has slapped the ball around and doesn't look like a real power hitter to me. Anyway, I may take a trip or two to Mesa this fall and see if I'm wrong. Don't misunderstand: Harvey Kueen, another big guy like AG, had a hell of a career whacking the ball all around. Just don'[t see the big time power Allen suggested. How'd he do so far in HRs in the minors, KC/Ron???

Neither Scherzer nor Leyland could answer whether the pitcher might be able to make next start.

Scherzer said he's had a sore deltoid after pitching but never during a game until last night.
Scherzer said he was not worried last night that he might have a serious injury.

Leyland said Berry would be fine. Berry said he's good. Probably mostly fear of having hurt labrum like he had in college.
Berry said it was a "huge relief" that he didn't hurt his shoulder.
In 2005, he tore his rotator cuff, labrum, everything.

Leyland said Villarreal, Downs, and Coke unavailable out of pen.

I think the power was in the lower minors, maybe not so much at AA Erie, he is adjusting as he moves up, Power is there, just raw, see how he does next year, if anything I would love him as a 4th OF along with Dirks, scrapping who they already have, but he needs to play every day, so probably he is at AA/AAA first half next year, just 21 he's big but still maturing.
Kuenn was a line drive hitter sprayed to all fields some kind of back leg kick gave him the line drive swing he had. My Second favorite Tigers shortstop next to Tram.

In my first game at Briggs Stadium on June 15, 1957 I saw Kueen homer and beat the Red Soc in the 10th inning. Ah, the memories. Anyway, my point is that the kid Garcia is like Kueen in that he's big but may not homer nearly as much as his twin-like Cabby. I'd say 20 HRs maybe. As you say, he's still developing. Scary to think just how much power he might have in a few years...but I can still see him spraying the ball around. btw, unlike Harvey, this kid is super fast. I'd prefer to see him as the RF, playing right along with AJ and Dirks. Methinks BB is gone and we all know Delmon is outta here.

My possible opening day roster:
Alex C, Prince 1B, OI at 2nd, Miggy 3rd and a new SS (someone w/speed). Dirks in LF, AJ in CF and Garcia in RF, QB in reserve. Martinez DH. I see a surprise or 2 in back-up OF's and a closer & the guy in Cleveland could well end up in Detroit. BYE BYE: Papa Grande, Jhonny P, Delmon, BB, Rabum, maybe Santiago. Oh, and also: JL.

I'd rather see Garcia try and hit #2 than have Infante at the top of the order.

I don't trust Dirks and Garcia as every day players. They need somebody in at least one of those spots that is a proven ML player. They are going to need another SP as well.

This.

Neither are proven run producers which is what we need to compliment our corner outfielders.

I feel SP will only be an issue if we can't trade Porcello. both Smyly and Below could be #4's on most teams.

Bad baserunning by the as there. Glad to see the d take advantage.

Jeez hung a fricking slider...lucky it didn't go 450 feet...and still got an out out of it...

Is it possible to beat 2 pitchers with era's under 2 in consecutive nights?

With this team? Very possible.

Never seen a team that can rock a decent pitcher then bumble around a 5+ ERA guy. It is just weird...
