Turner is starting.

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Jacob Turner will start on the mound and be relieved by Andy Oliver today when the Detroit Tigers host the Atlanta Braves at Joker Marchant Stadium.
Turner and Oliver are two of several young pitchers competing to win the role as fifth starter for the Tigers.
Clete Thomas is starting in center field and leading off in place of Austin Jackson.
In addition to Turner and Oliver, these pitchers are scheduled to pitch for the Tigers: Luis Marte, Jose Valverde, Joaquin Benoit and Octavio Dotel.

Guess no radio except XM/Sirius but Dan Dickerson says;
Turner struggled with fastball all day....looked like had no command of sinker....just kept running off plate, in to RHB, away from LHB...

Turner started for Tigers, but struggled: faced 10 batters, six reached...left after 1.1IP...Marte got final two outs of 2nd, stranding 3BR.

Marte pitched strong third, with 2K....Oliver just pitched his fourth shutout inning of spring, a 1-2-3 4th...

Tigers have hit for the cycle last 2 innings. RBI single from Strieby, 2-run triple by Raburn (off Beachy) helped Tigers to 4-0 lead in 2nd...

Then Cabrera launched - and I mean launched - a HR to the top of the berm straight down LF line leading off 3rd to make it 5-0.

more from Dickerson

Miguel Cabrera just hit one of the farthest spring home runs I

Rarer occurrence in Tigers rally: Delmon Young walk or a first half big hit from Raburn?

Clete Thomas just sat on a fastball and tore it down the line. Bat speed is there. He looks good.

Folks sit on the grass berm behind Marchant Stadium's LF fence. Often, homers land among them. Miguel Cabrera's just landed OVER them.

Turner did not look good last season and unless he picks up quickly he won't be the 5th starter. Another 1-2 years.

Leyland will continue to soft-pedal Luis Marte, because of youth. But he has an excellent fastball-slider combo and poise. Impressive reliever.

3 hitless innings on 3 walks for Andy Oliver, who had a nasty slider going. Guessing Jeff Jones spoke up when he told him that was it.

Oliver cruises thru 2IP...so gets a third: walks first two in 6th, but fine catch by Avisail Garcia on sinking liner starts DP for first 2 outs...

Oliver then gets routine fly. Final line: 3IP, 0R, 0H, 3BB, 3K....
Tigers lead 5-0, now going to top of 7th....

Tigers have been seeing Andy Oliver, circa 2010, during his early stints. Mean fastball and slider -- and in the strike zone. Looming bonus there if he commands them.
Amend Oliver remarks to say "when in strike zone," which is still his battle: three walks today.

According to Jim Leyland, Drew Smyly will get his first start of the spring in Sunday's split-squad game against the Astros.

More dumb ass from Braves announcers: "Santiago, with that speed, gets on. And the Tigers will pinch run for him."

Valverde pitching in the 8th inning.

I firmly believe he needs at least a full season at AAA.

Below on the other hand I think is ready enough, and being a LHP is who I'd pick, assuming someone else does really make a name for themselves in ST.
