Tigers vs. mariners Game 162 October 5, 2022 - and offseason to 2023

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

It?s interesting to read how so many fans are still holding onto the same list of roster needs that Al Avila had. Thinking the same way and selecting players that fit the old mold of the Avila roster years.

But this is a whole new ballgame. New(ish) owner, new manager and a new man in charge. Even new titles.

Everything is going to be new in this regime. Including the characteristics of every player who is signed.

PoBO Scott Harris has given us the parameters in a number of interviews and statements. Here are the top 5 things he?s going to be looking for before inking any player to the 2023 roster?..

The Tigers are receiving interest from other teams in their relievers.
Most notably, Joe Jimenez, Alex Lange and Gregory Soto.

It is expected that at least 1 of them will be traded in order to fill some of the many holes in the Tigers roster. Currently, Scott Harris is building reliever depth in the minors in anticipation of this.

If you could trade only 1 of them, which reliever would you let go? Which one would bring the best return back to the Tigers?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

MLB is sneaky and secretly giving certain teams the baseballs that go further.
MLB used three distinct balls in 2022, per a new report from Insider.

One type of ball with a more batter-friendly weight profile mostly showed up in two places:

- Postseason games
- Regular season Yankees games as Aaron Judge chased the HR record.

There were a number of record-setting free agent signings this past week. All of them are expensive and long-term. Several of them that ranged from 9-11 years and involved guaranteed contracts of $300 + million.

Most of the contracts involved full no-trade clauses. And by the time these contracts are over, most of the players will be 40+ years old.

Given the salaries and ages involved, almost all of these contracts are not expected to end well. But these teams are looking to win in the near future while sacrificing the long-term as these contracts fully play out.

The Tigers had a number of these contracts in the past. Because they ended up tearing down the team and trading a number of these players, they were left with 3 contracts that had to play out ? Jordan Zimmermann, Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera. This is Miggy?s last year before retirement. He will be 40 years old this season and has been playing part time while taking up a full roster spot.

The Tigers were also in win now mode a decade ago. However, their desired results by loading the roster with free agent stars fell flat. The team has been in the tear down/rebuild phase now for the last 8 years. Add in a minimum of 2 more years and the process to rebuild will take a minimum of a decade. Detroit holds MLB?s current record for the longest playoff drought.

If you had it to do all over again, would you still take on long-term expensive contracts in the hope of winning that ring? Or is the price too high?

Would you rather build a more sensible team of mostly home-grown players and aim for a team that is sustainable year-to-year ? avoiding the inevitable tear down that comes when your expensive players are no longer capable of playing to a high level due to injury and age? This method would not preclude adding a free agent or two on reasonable contracts to fill the remaining holes.
A strategy similar to what the Cardinals practice.

Which roster building strategy do you prefer?

1. Win now mode with expensive contracts but followed by tear down.

2. Mostly homegrown sustainable talent that keeps the team competitive every year.

The way I look at it...as long as both teams are playing with the same ball it really doesn't matter.

I wonder if MLB will institute a policy where players don't toss baseballs in the seats anymore to lower the sample size for Wells to evaluate in 2023. The advantage for Judge and, consequently, the Yankees, is realized if it's proven that only Judge was swinging at the "Goldilocks" ball so as to track his home runs.

that may be true, but the other team was also playing with the same balls. Both teams had the same "advantage" or "disadvantage"

The other team is only playing with those balls for a 3 or 4 game series not most of the year, if they are even getting the same Judge/yankee balls when they are up to bat.

I guess I just don't get why it's a big deal. Hell, every stadium has significantly different dimensions, some have huge foul territories, different elevations, high fences, indoor or outdoor, Pitchers parks, hitters parks, etc. So the balls are a little different too...NBD
