Perhaps Leyland wants his "scrappy" bench players to get their ABs in during ST, since they likely won't be playing much, once the season commences next month. The month of June, when interleague play becomes the most frequent, as well as Jimmy's infamous Sunday afternoon lineups, is when players like Kelly and Laird will probably see their playing time increase.

I imagine that Miggy is playing more this spring, b/c of his "newer" position @ 3B on the field, otherwise Kelly/Inge would be playing instead for Cabrera @ 3rd.
