Tigers vs. phillies Spring Training March 19

Scherzer leaving too many of his pitches smack in the middle of the strike zone this inning.
Hershiser says he is getting too fastball happy this inning with pitch count past 50.

Nice diving catch by Matt Young in left,
but runner tags and scores on sac fly,

Scherzer first Tiger to pitch into the fifth this spring,
Better for him if it had been four innings,
Phils score 4, take 4-3 lead

Long swings by Clete and Inge just stood there like the house on the side of the road.

Balester pitches well in the 6th,

That was 70 pitches, 51 strikes for Scherzer over 5 innings. Tigers will take that ratio from him. just labored some in the 5th.

Dotel induces a GIDP to end the 7th, after a K and then issuing a BB. Good job, need the Tigers bats to get more busy, down by a run.

Strieby, not known for his defense made a nice play on the grounder down the line and flip to Valverde covering first.

Big Potato tosses a 1-2-3 8th.

Tigs with 3 outs left to try to avoid what would be taking only their second loss...with ~ a couple of weeks left in ST.

Inge 0-4 k

spring batting average .207

MMA and strength training must have done wonders for Inge.

Worth scorches the ball to center over posednik for a double. Ill take Worth over Inge thank you.

Crap, not quite deep enough.

Quick game, but the staller Yanks are still on the Tigers' ST slate on the road and @ Lakeland, likely to be longer games, regardless of the score.

Wooo...Worth double!!

It's a good thing that guy didn't get thrown out trying to reach third, or we'd have never heard the end of it from Bob.

Purcey's revenge pitching for phillies high and tight first pitch to Clete, big swing and miss, fouls back a letter high fastball, swings through a slider,

Inge hits a full count fly deep to the warning track in left center and podsednik catches it,

Worth fouls off several pitches, works a full count, fly to deep center over podsednik's head for a double,

Jackson takes an inside fastball strike, fouls it off the catcher, takes outside, low in the dirt, hard hit grounder to third,

Tigers lose just their second game of the spring 4 - 3.

sort of an update;
Scherzer said Cabrera had cuts above and below his eye from the impact on his sunglasses, but that he could see out of his eye.

It's a miracle the glasses didn't shatter and really do some damage. Seems like they just got pushed against the ridges of his eye and cut his skin. I'm sure it'll probably bruise a bit too.

Yeah, he is lucky in that respect the sunglasses didn't cut/scratch the cornea/eye. That and either a fractured orbital bone or cheekbone was the first thing I thought.

Leyland spoke with Cabrera in trainer's room, wouldn't provide additional detail other than saying he was still at area hospital.
Consensus from Tigers is it was a bad-hop off a bad infield that conked Cabrera. Leyland said: A Gold Glover would be in the hospital, also.
I think if you see the replay, the ball took a high bounce of 3 feet? after it hit the ground.

Can't remember if the ball took one or two hops when it took a crazy bounce and smacked into Miggy's partially-turned face.
