My point is, and always has been, paying players past their prime is a terrible way to do things. THAT was the reason I hated the JV extension and the Miggy extension.

First, Mr I might not be as smart as you think...since the Tigers have been losing money for years. As Rebiv has said over and over...this impacts the farm system / player development. Second, if it were up to me I would pay players past the age of 32...just not those HUGE long term deals that START at 32. I wouldn't have a payroll of $60M, I would spend what the owner allows me to spend...but I wouldn't have a team of stars and scrubs.

St Louis let Pujols walk. At that time he was arguably a better hitter leading up to that point than Miggy is. They are still a contending team with a balanced lineup, rotation and bull pen. That is how you fill the stands, make money and win.

The average age of a player signing his first extension or going Free Agent is 29-30. Unless, of course, they are star players and they entered earlier than 24. And this are usually the ones that are getting the long contracts with big monies.

McCutchen is 28 and signed an extension when he was 25 before he starting hitting .300 BAVG. Although he is signed through 2018 with club option, PIT risks losing him if they don't re-sign him to an extended contract.

Outside of his injuries he's still in his prime if you ask me. Look at his numbers, not just home runs, and tell me I'm wrong.

I agree...Miggy is at the tail end of his prime. His slightly declining numbers are mostly due to injuries which are most likely to continue as an aging player's body typically breaks down more often due to wear and tear.

You never know if someone is at the end of their prime until they get there. Not every ballplayer start to fade at the same age. And I've seen guys have an injury or two in their 30's then play all the season the next 4 years.

Power is going to drop, that's natural. That's why you sign Miggy because he's not just a power guy. He can still hit well. But unless you draft extremely well, you need to sign aging stars to big money or you end up like 2003.
