Tigers vs. Rangers July 5, 2021 Game 85

It would be cool to get back into the playoffs with Miggy still on the team before he retires.

There is a small, very outside chance that Verlander might be on this team next year. He's clearly open to the idea. AJ is familiar. Just a matter of opening up the wallet just a crack (as he won't likely demand a massive pay day)

That would be pretty cool to see them in the playoffs in a Tiger uniform again.

However, Miggy is only on this team until he gets to 3,000 hits/500 HR's. They will buy him out after that. ZERO reasons to keep him around at this point. He's a below league average hitter and he can't play defense. And I LOVE Miggy. Best hitter in my lifetime (all due respect to Gwynn) but it's time to move on. Give him Kaline's old spot as Ambassador for all things Detroit Tigers.

I highly doubt Verlander comes back to Detroit next year unless they over pay for him. Coming off TJ surgery would be too much of a risk. I see him going somewhere on a cheap contract to chase another ring. As far as Miggy...that's a shit ton of money to pay a guy to sit on his fat ass. Probably about $65-70M

I can see Verlander back in Detroit. I don't think its LIKELY, but there is, IMO, about a 25% chance. He will be 38 and coming off TJ...NOBODY is going to want that risk....which will keep his price tag down.

As far as chasing a ring.....he can do that here.....clearly a LOT of things have to go right for that to happen....but this ship is at least sailing in the right direction. If (lots of them) Torkelson, Greene, Dingler and Manning develop into good players. If Mize, Skubal and Turnbull all take the next step. If we get a good return on Boyd. If we keep Schoop and he continues to produce. If most of that happens.....a return to the playoffs is closer than i would have thought going into 2021.

If I'm the Tigers, I'd rather pay Cabrera to sit on his ass at home than to basically be a $30M/year Willi Castro. Their slash lines are almost identical. He's not taking a roster spot from anyone more deserving RIGHT NOW.....but I'd desperately hope that by next year he is......at which point the Tigers, as respectfully as possible, send him on his merry way.

As far as JV is concerned...I don't want him back. Put it this way...if it were some other pitcher that is 39 years old & missed 2 seasons due to TJ surgery, would you want the Tigers signing him?

Bring him back to retire as a tiger.

I don't want Verlander back as well. If you want him to retire wait until he's 41 and let him throw a pitch on opening day in Detroit. No way at 25-30m for a season or two. I expect he'll still ask for that.

His last full season he was 21-6 with a 2.58 era. Led the league with 223 IP. Career best 5.5 hits/9 and 12.1K/9.

Yeah, he'd be worth a flyer.

That said, like ANY player signed the contract has to be worth it. Would I take that chance at $33,000,000 a year? No, of course not.

$10M??? Yup.

he was 36. He is coming off TJ surgery and will be 39.

Now, for $10M...it might be worth the risk. But I'd still prefer they not do it.

No way. Guy got $33/year at 35 coming off a few very good years.

My guess......1 year....$10M-$15M.

I like Detroit's SP core right now. I think he gets more but even if it's 10-15 mill I prefer to use that on a position player.

If the rest of THIS season sees this team continue to be decent....meaning a final record around 76-86.....and the players that we all want to see step up.....Mize, Turnbull, Skubal, and Daz Cameron at the MLB level and Torkelson, Green and Dingler at the MILB level do actually show they will be ready to contribute in 2022....why wouldnt you want to add JV to that list?

Now, I'm not saying we blindly sign him without seeing in a tryout that he can still throw it.....but even if can come in and be a 4th starter. Log 180 innings with an ERA hovering around 3.80 - 4.20....in todays starters currency......teams are paying $10M+/year for that. He's beloved here as well....so the higher attendance wouldn't hurt, either.

I guess if ALL of those things happened, I would sign off on a $10M contract for JV. That said, I highly doubt that Green, Tork, and Dingler will have enough experience to warrant being on the roster in the spring. I think Green and Tork get called up during the season next year. My guess is next spring the team will look a lot like it does right now with the exception of a few mid level free agent signings. Would that be enough to "entice" Verlander to sign on as a free agent?

No to Verlander.

CI won?t pay him anyway. Next to Cabrera, #2 on the payroll is Grossman at $5 million (for players actually playing).

It?s acid in CI?s eyes to have $17 million (Boyd and Fulmer eat up more than half that amount) tied up in IR payroll. He won?t risk that with JV, even if JV agreed to playing here at CI?s price. Also, (pure speculation) CI doesn?t want his roster populated with ex-Tigers his that has dad extended.

CI is a balance-sheet owner. His championships are measured in EBIDTA, not PECOTA.

that's good...run it like a business, not a fantasy baseball team

To a degree, but then the Tigers need to drastically improve their player evaluation and development if it expects to win championships with mostly under-28-year-old players under team control.

Over and over.

I don't know if winning a championship is the #1 goal
