Justin Verlander back on mound; Prince Fielder has excellent numbers vs. Josh Beckett.
Justin Verlander will try to get the Detroit Tigers back on track.
Verlander will have to get back on track himself.
Verlander got roughed up for four runs in the seventh inning Thursday night and suffered the loss in a 5-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians.
The Tigers held a 3-1 lead before Verlander allowed six hits -- including home runs by Carlos Santana and Travis Hafner -- in the seventh inning.
Verlander (11-6, 2.60 ERA) will start for the Tigers tonight when they play the second game of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. He is 3-3 with a 3.22 ERA in nine career starts against the Red Sox.
Prince Fielder is 4-for-8 with three home runs in his career against Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett (5-9, 4.57 ERA). Delmon Young is hitting .350 (7-for-20) against Beckett for his career.
The lineup the Tigers are using tonight has become their regular lineup against right-handed starters with one exception: Alex Avila and Jhonny Peralta have switched spots. Brennan Boesch and Avila, a pair of left-handed hitters, will bat back-to-back, followed by Peralta and Omar Infante, who hit right-handed.
The Tigers are 2-5 on their current nine-game road trip.
